It depends if you get the implants over or under the muscle. Under the muscle implants do not impede breastfeeding.

It is true as Lisa advised you that it depends on if the implant is behind the muscle or not. My best friend has had her breast augmented twice and then had a suprise child later in life that she did successfully breast feed for 6 months. However she does complain that after breastfeeding that her breast do sag more and have moved to the sides of her chest.

Yes! Normally it is breast reduction surgery that makes breastfeeding very difficult. It would be a great idea to take a breastfeeding class and have the number of a good lactation consultant on hand for help after the baby is born. Good Luck!!

Reduction or implants? Usually you can with both, but it can be tricky with reduction depending on how much was removed.

I have implants and was able to breastfeed just fine. Everyone kept telling me that I was not going to be able to, of course based on nothing more than their own ideas. And sure enough, my milk came in and my baby did wonderfully. I found it easier to to pump a bit first in the mornings when i was at my fullest (though some women without implants might say the same.) I have heard that our breast can get even firmer when our milk is in (because our implants is pushing against the milk ducts) so I liked to soften my breast for my son first by pumping about 1/2 oz. He seemed to have an easier time latching on then. Good luck!

I am living proof that you can indeed breastfeed successfully after having breast implants. I have had three implant surgeries all through a small cut at the bottom of my nipples and had no complications with milk production. Most lactation specialists will tell you that there is no reason to doubt your ability to breastfeed your baby after surgeries. A doula who I know even saw a woman breastfeed after a reduction, so YES YES YES!!!
It can be done!!!

Contact the La Leche League or call Marie Young (she is a doula who has tons of information about breastfeeding and has her mom-owned business on this site.)

It depends on where your breast implants are. Are they infront of the muscle or behind the muscle. Every doc has different tactics you need to check with that doc to dertermine if he cut mammory glands or not.

It will depend on what type of impants were used and how recently the procedure was done(if within the last 2yrs.) there is usually some scar tissue that can initally interfer w/ the "let down" response i.e. milk traveling to the nipple. Other than that there is no problem and you sould be encoraged to try, I work for a very skilled surgon who doesthis type of work and he was encouraging.Good luck!

Yes you can. I would only suggest trying to breast feed if you start with saline implants, under the muscle would be best. I had my breast aug about 3 years before getting pregnant and nursed just fine. However, I will let you know the surgery is expensive and pregnancy and nursing do lots to your breasts. Sagging, stretch marks.. etc. If you get the implant under the muscle part of you breast is firm and intact and the real breast tissue sags lower than the implant. Yah, it doesn't look great! lol I did have an over 50+ weight gain with pregnancy so that didn't help! They still look pretty good, better than before! Good luck!

I understand you can IF they didnt remove and recenter your nipples. I would call a lactation consultant at your hospital. they are very helpful.

I remember reading that the placement of the incision has some impact on whether or not milk ducts were likely cut. Another great resource is to call your local La Leche League leader. They are trained to answer questions like this, and all for free!

Yes you can!! It does however depend how they did the surgery. Sometimes they cut into the ducts or around the nipple and that can affect the milk. I would recommend contacting a lactation consultant. Usually the hospitals have one on staff. good luck!

I believe it depends on the woman, my mom who has 5 kids , breastfed all 5 of us after getting implants.and she got hers back in like 1974.

my cosmetic surgeon told me it would be 50% chance. I chose to hold off until being done baby making. I figured it was pointless to spend $5000 to fix them then turn around and ruin them again with another baby and possibly not be able to breastfeed.

It also depends on what type of augmentation too. I wanted my incision to be in the armpit but he told me that wouldn't be possible because I have one breast naturally lower than the other so he would have to do more than just add implants to fix that. It isn't noticeable now with smaller breasts but with implants it would cause the height to be more noticeable.

I got implants in 2000... Had my first baby in 2003 nursed for 11 months, 2nd baby in 2006 and nursed for 13 months. So yes it is possible. I asked the doctor before nursing my first and they wouldn't give me a straight answer. But both of my children are very healthy!! Good luck

You can usually breastfeed after augmentation IF they didn't cut the ducts around the areola and you won't know that from the scar - check your records. Even then, some women heal back up and can breastfeed - some don't. Be sure to tell your health care provider, though, and ask for a lactation consultant to be available in case you need help after the baby is born.

As long as the implants were/are done under the muscle, you should have no problems (according to the plastic surgeon I went to). I did ask this but I don't plan on having any more children, I was just curious.

I've known people who have with the help of La Leche League. You should contact them.

I just heard a Dr. on the radio two days ago who performs the surgery say that you might be able to but it is not a guarantee.
