i have a clogged milk duct that won't seem to come out. but that's not my question.. if i were to stop nursing now, do i have to get the clog out first? or will it dry up like the rest of my milk?

What can I do next?

please dont quit nursing because of a clogged duct!

the thing that always helped me the most (and i got mastitis with both of my kids) was to take some damp paper towel and put it in the bottom of a coffee cup. add 3 drops of tea tree oil and then microwave it for 15 seconds. put the clogged part of your breast over the top of the cup so the steam rises up to it. it helps a TON. also try to make sure the babies nose if facing where the clog is at. that will help create the most suction so the baby can suck the clog out.

i had that problem last week and the best way to get them to come out is breastfeeding! i nursed my boy a bit more often, placed warm towels and the clog came out. good luck! i got a lot of help from a lactation consultant from la leche liga llli.org.

If you stop nursing while you have a plugged duct you could be setting yourself up for mastitis, which is like having the flu on top of a painful lump in your breast. I'd try my best to get it out before weaning.

I've found that nursing, drinking lots of water, moist heat and warm baths relieved my clogged milk ducts. I only got them when my babies were very young. After my 4th baby weaned 5 years ago, it took 2 years for the lumps in my breasts to go away. They weren't plugged but there were lumps. They will dry up with your milk but make sure they aren't infected. I've never had an infected one. Good luck!
