I have an 11 week old son...I was feeding my son every 3 hours and then he started to get fussy with me during feedings. Then it was every 3 to 4 hours and that seemed to be going fine. Now he seems to eat between 3 and 5 hours and I feel like he is not eating enough during the day. But he is not fussy. Should I be this concerned or am I doing the right thing with him?

So What Happened?

Well after getting responses on here and talking to friends, I realized my baby just wasn't hungry every 3 hours. He is now between 3 and 5 hours depending on him. No more fussy baby boy and no more strung out mom! Thank You to everyone!!!

Congratulations while you're breastfeeding! Continue Breastfeeding him; offer feedings frequently, don't wait for him to get fuzzy or when he strats to cry. You must check that your baby is wetting enough diapers aprox 5 to 7 each day or his weight gain. whatever you do, you should continue breastfeeding.

At 11 weeks, your son is fine! He will let you know how much he wants/doesn't want. He is starting to listen to his hunger pangs and full feelings. This s a great thing for him! It is perfectly normal for his feedings to come fewer and farther between. Just be prepared for his growth spurts and teething (hopefully farther down the road) when his appetite will increase.

My son started off at about every 4 hours and by the time he was 2 or 3 months old, he was already sleeping through the night! and that wasn't just a 6-8 hour stretch, it was 10-12 hours!!! Scared me the first time, but his stomach woke him when he was ready to eat.

As long as his pediatrician is not concerned (you should have a well-baby check-up soon), you shouldn't be!

I hope this eases your concerns.

May God bless you!
S.

You are doing fine. If the baby is eating between 3 to 5 hours apart that is good. That means he is getting enough milk. Babies will eat when they are hungry. If he is fussy when you are feeding him that means he is not hungry. Your doing a good job mom Keep it up. Im a mom of 4 and they eat all the time now that they are older.

Babies eat when they are hungry. My first child would only eat 3-4 ounces a day, not every 3-5hrs …a day at daycare. She would refuse bottle after bottle. She was only in the 3% for weight but was healthy and growing. My second daughter (only 6mths) is in the 50% for weight but still only eats about 8ounces a day at daycare. Every child is different and goes through different periods. During a growth spirt they eat a lot and more frequent then they slow down. I would not worry, if you son is not fuzzy then he is fine and getting enough food. Just make sure he doesn't loss weight. Not every child is a chunky baby. My first daughter had no baby fat on her, no rolls nothing. She was so lean and skinny but that was her built and the way she was suppose to be. She was healthy. I remember times when she would go 6-8 hrs without eating. I even remember a day at daycare when she didn't eat at all, she refused every bottle. She still doesn't eat a lot but she is healthy. I would just enjoy your son and not worry about his eating unless you see a weight drop. Too many people obessess over what their babies eat and try to force feed them because they aren't eating as often or as much as some book says they should. Just relax and each your kids.

That is the great thing about breast feeding- it works on supply and demand. Unfortunatly, it takes a little while to work itself out. It seems that you have gotten into a rhythm with your son and he is doing fine. If you are concerned, check his output (diapers). Ask your pediatrition for exact amounts he should be peeing. You can also check his weight gain. Good luck!

your docotor will let you know for sure during your many appointments this first year. Only if he is not gaining weight or even lossing some should you be concerned. Most likely, he is just fine and he knows how much he needs. Watch his growth curve and try not to worry too much!

Hi, I have a nine-week-old son and I have the same concern like you do. However, my mom-in-law told me about this website and I joined it yesterday and the responses you received dissolved my worry. I am so glad. Thanks.
