That is normal. It is just the fat rising to the top of the bag. Give it a good shake and you are good to go. Good Luck.

Hello,
I am currently nursing my 2 month old daughter. I pump at least once a day. I introduced a bottle to her a while back. When I pump, I store the breastmilk in the Lasinoh plastic bags and freeze it. I usually warm the milk right from the freezer. This time I tried thawing it overnight in the fridge. Today I noticed a yellow liquid once the breastmilk settled. Does anyone know if this fat seperating from the milk? Or is something wrong?
Thank you!!

Yep that is what it is. Just shake it a bit to mix it! Best wishes to you on your return to work.
No worries, you are right. The "hind milk" seperates from the rest when refrigerated. I sometimes even notice that the milk can be a slightly different shade from one day to the next. I have no idea why that is-maybe what I eat. It happened with my last child as well and she is a wonderful 3 year old.
Sorry you have to return to work. Just know that your daughter will be having a better day than you. Hopefully no one will expect too much from you on that first day!
L.:
breastmilk is not homogenized and so it separates... milk can be any number of colors. I would not worry.
when mixing I would suggest gently swirling not shaking vigioursly.

Yes, it's fat separating.
Good luck with your return to work!
I thought something was wrong with my breastmilk too, but it is normal.
Hi L.,
Yes I believe you're correct that it's the fat separating from the milk. When I used to store my milk, I'd notice some days it was different in colors too. My lactation nurse told me it could change from day to day depending on what you ate. It also can change through time as your body changes the contents on what your baby needs. In my opinion, what you have is completely normal! Oh also, when you thaw it overnight, before putting it in the bottle I would just mixed the milk up before feeding it to your daughter incase she doesn't finish all of it, you'll know she consumed a mixture of what was in there.
Just shake it or mix it up. It's normal! :)
