Breastfed Baby Might Need Supplement...

My son will start daycare next week and at this point he will take a bottle with breast milk in it but refuses the formula. We have only tried the Enfamil Lipid, which I have read is the closest to breast milk taste wise. I remember when we brought my first son to daycare that I was not able to pump enough for him and we needed to give him some formula to get him through the day. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for my current son, he will actually spit out the formula, lol! *Please note: I am aware that breast milk is the best, I am not looking to hear about how I should only breast feed, because in an ideal world, I would. I do have to go back to work though, so am interested in what others have done to feed their babies...
Thanks,
K.

My kid liked "Similac" better than Enfamil.

Hi K., It looks like you might just need to keep pushing the formula on him until he takes it. Also, I had a friend who would drive to her sons daycare during lunch to breastfeed him (I don't know if that's an option for you or not). Maybe you could just pump a little every time you feed him and just keep saving it or even mix it with the formula half and half. Hope it works out for you!

I pumped everyday of the week at work or at home. I took the breastmilk home each day and froze whatever wasn't needed for the next day if extra. If not enough, then I would have her dad (stay at home) pull from freezer stock and if still short he combined formula with breast milk to make it go farther. At end of work day I always nursed to maintain the skin skin contact with my baby that we lacked during the day. My advice may not be helpful...I had tons of milk usually and absolutely needed to pump. BTW, are you drinking a minimum of half your body weight in fluid OZ of water per day? (e.g., you weigh 180 lbs so you drink at least 90 fluid oz per day) This could help the milk production--not to mention energy and stress levels. Oh, and just wanted to make sure you know your employer is usually required by law to make time and space for pumping.

I also breastfeed but had to return to work. I pumped as much as possible then divided evenly between his day time bottles and made up the difference with Enfimil Lipil. This seemed to work really well. Some days he got more breast milk and less formula and some days a little more formula. It changed daily as I pumped varing amounts (as much as I made). This seemed to work as what I ate would change the color and (i assume) flavor, so he was happy with this. As he got older and I made less it was a natural transition to whole milk as well. Good luck at work.

First, really work on your pumping skills and upping your supply. Pumping can be an art, especially getting the maximum out of you. You can also try various teas and make sure you're getting enough quality fat, including saturated, in your diet to make sure your milk is nutritious and satisfying to your baby. Next, presbyterian hospital has classes just for your situation. Try to take one to help answer your questions and get ideas to help this transition. I have no idea if this would work, but could you mix your breastmilk with a little formula and gradually change the ratio as he gets used to it.

Finally, Keep Nursing as much as you can! The more you do it, the more you can pump. Establish a pumping schedule so your body is used to it and can supply more. Good luck.
