I'm thinking about breast reduction surgery and I'm wondering if any of you who have had the surgery would be willing to tell me if you are glad you did it, and if not, why? What was recovery like? Did you experience any problems with the surgery or recovery?
I used to be a 34C (before kids), and now after two pregnancies, and breastfeeding I am a 34H/I. As you might imagine, my back hurts. A lot. My primary care doctor went through the options with me, and I decided I'd like to go to a plastic surgeon for a consult. My appointment with the plastic surgeon is later this afternoon.
Of course, my husband hates the idea of my having a reduction (I'm thinking about going back to the size I was before, a 34C). However, ultimately he will support me in whatever I decide to do.
Anyhow, any advice you can give me would be very much appreciated!
I just wanted to update this - I had the surgery three weeks ago, and I'm SO glad I did! The first few days afterward were pretty rough, but after that I started to feel better quickly, and now I'm well on my way to recovery. My new, perky boobs are awesome! ;) I went to buy a sports bra the other day (this is the only type I'm supposed to wear until 4-6 weeks after surgery), and was THRILLED to buy a size medium! And it only cost $10! (As opposed to sports bras in size 34H/I, which cost an arm and a leg, and are special-order...)
Best of all, my back pain is gone. Ahhhhh!
My sister did it through Kaiser about ten years ago. OMG she is so happy she did! Not only did it resolve her back problems it gave her such a nice, more balanced figure.
Your hubby will get used to it, look at it this way: he's going to get a whole new set of tatas to enjoy (once you're fully healed of course) without cheating on his wife!
In addiction to myself, my sister and two cousins have all had it done and we all agree it was the best thing we ever did for ourselves! I used to suffer from head aches and back numbness and neck pain every day, it all went away instantly when I woke up after my reduction.
The pain was not too bad, but the look was shocking at first, the scars can be scary to see, but for me they faded to a light white you can hardly see at all now. I did have some wound break down at the edge that left a hard pump on the edge of my scar, but that has slowly faded until now it is almost gone (over about 5 years).
For me, I would do it again no questions asked.
A highschool friend had hers done and was so incredibly happy. She had to wait until she was 21 to get them done because her doctors didn't want to do it before then. She has never regretted it since and that was over 20 years ago. I'm certain much has changed while some things remain the same.
I would get all the information I could before making such a drastic decision.
My highschool friend had hers reduced down to a DD still ample but much more manageable for her.
A friend of mine did and she has not regretted it one bit! She was a JJ and went down to C I think. Her back and shoulders no longer hurt, and she can actually buy small and medium shirts now. She is very happy with her choice!
I personally have not, but one of my girlfriend's did. She was big in high school - like a 34I - and it was hard on her small frame. After two babies she was DONE!!
She did some research and went with a doctor who had a lot of experience. She's in SFO as well. I'll ask her what doctor she used.
She's been VERY happy with having it done...her shoulders and back don't hurt anymore and she can find tops to fit!
Carefully vet the proceedure, the recovery and the aftercare with your insurer too. one co-worker had hers fully covered, the other had to go out of pocket, with the same insurance plan.
Both were happy at first. Each, has since put on weight, including in the chest.

I got my breast surgery done at Kaiser last Sept. The cost was covered as a medical necessity. I went from 34E/F to 34C. It was the best decision I ever made. Wish I had it done 20 yrs ago. I healed fast. Very mild to no pain at all. Got sensation in nipples back within couple days which normally take longer up to a year. Scars are fading and are minimal. I look and feel great. After couple weeks was in great shape. Got a nice lift too. Better than ever!!!
