Breast Milk Out of a Sippy Cup?

So my almost 10 month old daughter has been exclusively breastfed and never really took to a bottle (I tried really hard in the beginning and then just sort of gave up trying, so it's prob partly my fault). Anyway, she now drinks water or diluted juice from a sippy cup during meal times and continues to nurse 4-5 times a day. My question is, is it okay to pump some breast milk and let her drink it in a sippy cup in place of a nursing? Just curious. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Absolutely! My DD never took a bottle and the only way that I could get out of the house without her was to give her breastmilk in her sippy. Go for it!

my son prefered that. at 10 months he was drinking 1-2 of his breast milk servings out of a sippy cup. he slowly asked for more and more of the feeding to be from the sippy cup gave up his last feeding season at 13 months all on his own.

I could have written your post almost word for word, except my 8 mo old has just started getting a good grasp on the sippy. My goal is to have him take a feeding a day of pumped milk out of a sippy. Go for it!

Hi mama! As a doula in Austin, tx (www.getbabied.com) I have to commend you for giving your little one breast milk any way she will take it! One problem with sippy cups though is that with anything other than water they're bad for children's teeth, because of the way the liquid sits in the back of the mouth. Sippy cups have been linked to tooth decay. My pediatrician recommends straw cups instead, particularly for any drinks besides water.

So that's my mama advice - but my doula advice is, if she refuses a straw cup, go for the breast milk in the sippy cup because as you know, nothing is better for her than breast milk!

My source about the sippy cup is the book baby 411 by austin pediatrician dr. Ari Brown.

Good luck :)

Of course! But be aware that when you are doing this, you are weaning her more and more from the breast to a sippy. Nothing wrong with that, just know that you are starting that process.

Go for it. Sippy cup or one of those with a straw. Either way it is a nice way to start the transition. Because to me pumping is an extra chore, I'd just do it for one time a day to start with.

So many of the benefits that come from nursing are from the actual act of nursing, that I would hesitate to take that away. It would likely not hurt to pump and give it to her in a cup now and again, but I would not completely replace actual nursing.

It is ok-but why bother? Water and diluted juice is fine for as long as you want to nurse then got to soy or rice or almond milk if you do not plan to go to regular milk. My daughter nurses about 20 months aand all they get is water or juice diluted 1:3 for the rest of their young life. No sodas, etc and some or 5 and 7. They get juice once a day, milk once a day and water ofter. They love an ice cube and sometimes she freezes juice and that juice cube is put in their water for fun.
