We are considering getting a boxer puppy for my two children. I am interested in others experiences with the breed and whether or not they are good with kids.

What can I do next?

My sister has one. She is the best dog with kids I have ever seem. My sister once joked that she would rather leave the kids with the dog then a babysitter. Boxers are well known for being good family dogs. They are cross bred with other dog for that trait.

I was two when my family got their first boxer, and have had one ever since. They are the best, especially the females. They do love being around family, and some can be hyper, but that depends on the boxer's personality. A great place to look is the AZ Boxer Rescue, there are a lot of boxers that need a good home.

Hi C.!

I am a SAHM with a 14 mo son. We have two boxers, 1 male and 1 female, both are 4 years old. They are SOOO good with the baby. They are very patient with toddler attention. When myhusband and I choose these dogs, we researched different breeds. We choose boxers for their reputation with being great with kids. Both of mine have fully lived up to our expectations. We spent a lot of time training them (just basic manners- sit, stay, down, leave it, etc.) while they were puppies. They are very well behaved (especially for big dogs).

My only caution to you is that they tend to be hyper. Mine have mellowed slightly with age but they are very active. Occassionaly one of them will knock the baby down in excitment to greet visitors. NEVER intentially!

Our boxers are great- I would definitely recommend boxers with kids. I would also stongly recommend training for the dogs and people to help create good behaviors and keep the dog out of trouble.

Good luck!

Boxers are the best!! I have had my precious Sedona for almost five years now and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. I am expecting my first child right now so am unable to speak of boxers and new borns however I teach private music lessons from my home and have children in and out of my house all day, everyday. Sedona is very respectful of the kids and knows her boundries with the them.
The one thing that may be a trial if you get a young boxer, is as they grow up (but before they are too mature and have settled down their energy level) boxers have a tendency to jump up on people and not really know their size. I'm sure your 13 year old would be fine but the 4 year old might wind up taking a tumble or two.
Boxers have great personalities and are very good with children. I keep seeing more and more pop up in my neighborhood!!

I've suggested this web site many times because I love it! try www.dogbreedinfo.com for lots of info about all kinds of breeds, there is also a section that you can take a quiz and it will give you a few different options of breeds that will work for your situation.
Good luck!

C.,
We have a boxer who will be 4 in April. My son is 10 and my daughter is 11 mo. He is the BEST dog ever. He is great with all kids - but does not like it when people wear hats. When I brought my daughter home from the hospital, he bcame very protective of our home. If someone knocked on the door he would bark and growl. When my daughter started crawling, I was worried that we would have to get rid of him - because he snapped at her twice when she was pinching and pulling on him. We scolded him and he changed. Now, he waits every morning for me to go in and get her up. He comes in with me and kisses her when I lay her down to change her diaper. In fact - if he doesn't come in with me and waits outside her door - she will not let me change her diaper until he comes in. I would strongly recommend a boxer for your family.

C., I would be cautious with a boxer. My experience with my brother-in-laws boxer is that while she is very sweet, she is extremely hyper and needs a lot of attention. So much so that he's hired a dog service to walk her and give her attention every day. (He lives in LA area works an insane amount of hours and travels frequently.) When they come out to visit us, she pretty much has to stay in her kennel the entire time she's here because she's very aggressive with our two dogs (a German Shepherd and Lab mix who are very tolerant and easy going). Plus, she's break everything in my house if we didn't keep her confined. She jumps up a lot and doesn't listen well (all signs that she is also in need of serious obedience training). I will say however that I am a firm believer that dogs are a product of their environment so if you have the time to spend with the puppy when it's young and train/shape it, you would probably be fine.

I have always loved boxers!! I have a 7 year old male right now. They are wonderful dogs, but they are hyper and playful. They can be like an eternal puppy. If you are wanting a dog that will just lay at your feet all day I don't think a boxer would be the one you want.

Hi!

We have a boxer and she is the most loving and sweet dog to our 10 month old son! She is great with him...I was really nervous before he was born because she is a "jumper" but she is so careful around him and really is his protector!

I have a boxer and she is the best dog we have ever had. She turned 1 in January and my kids are 10 and 7. They are so fun, animated and great with kids! If you can get one do it. I prefer females only because they dont mark their territory like males ( I have a male bulldog) My friend has a 7 month old boxer and their neighbors have 2 (almost 1) they all love them. Good Luck!

Hi!
We have a 3 yr old boxer (male)He was about a yr old when I had my twin boys.
He is the best dog. We have the twins and a 12 yr old boy, he lets the twins tug on his ears, tail, ride him like a horse, whatever they want, when he's had enough of them, he just goes into his area with his bed, that the boys cant get to. I have never, ever worried about him getting agressive. He seems to love being around the kids. They feed him food and are even around him with food and he is as gentle as can be.

He's about 65-70lbs, so sometimes when we are outside in the backyard and he's running around, we have to watch the boys closely to make sure he doesnt knock them over accidentally, because he does get pretty excited, but never has he ever tried to harm them in any way.

He's even tolerant of our 2 cats! I hope this helps, if you have any other questions about him, feel free to contact me!

My best friend has two boxers and she just loves them. Her children are 8 and 5 and they've never had any problem with them at all. As all puppies do, they get excited and jump and chew stuff up, but they've never been aggressive towards the children at all. They really are a great breed. Good luck!

I have a boxer and two childern. He is a very hyper dog but he is great with my kids. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she plays with him tries to ride him like a horse and he just lays there. I would suggest training and nutering or spaying them. Mine is not very well trained my husband got him before we were togather and he didnt train him or get him nueterted so he is a very hyper and doesnt listen very well but when it comes to my daughter he is kind and gental. (otherwise I would have gotten rid of him I am not an pet person) I would also crate train when you are gone too they are very smart dogs.
