I am nursing my 3 week old baby. She has been twisting and turning as if in pain trying to have a bowl movement but all she does is pass gas. What can I do to help her along. Also, could this be caused by something I ate?

What can I do next?

Probably something you ate. Pizza, ibuprofen, diet soda (or anything with aspartame) gave my little guy horrible belly aches. Just pay attention to your diet and you'll find what your little one can/can't tolerate.

I have a 6 week old and have similar issues. The pediatrician said the same thing as the previous post, use a baby size suppository when you notice your baby having stomach pain/gas and that should do the trick. Suppositories are not habit forming and this should all resolve at 12 weeks. I also thought it was diet related and have cut out dairy from my diet - which is extreme.

it can TOTALLY be caused by something you are eating!! For my first, it was dairy products. My friends son had problems when mommy ate eggs or tomatoes. Keep a food diary and that will help you figure out the triggers for your little one. Once I stopped eating all dairy, my baby was a delight! Before I figured it out, she was soooo fussy and gassy. It is worth a try.

PB8. I open capsules and give 1/2 to newborns and it can help a TON. This will help until the offending food gets out of your milk.

Also, getting the baby adjusted helps even more. A friend's son hadn't had a bowel movement in 6 or 7 days and he was 3 months old. She took him in (nervously) and got him adjusted. Within 30 minutes he had poop all the way up to his neck....and resumed normal bowel movements daily after that.

Both my daughters had bad gas as newborns. I HIGHLY recommend Biogaia drops. It is a probiotic (like what is in yogurt). You just give them a few drops a day (I think it is 5 drops) and it helps immensely! Our pediatrician recommended it to me with my first daughter. Recently, Parents magazine did an article that talked about it. You can get it from the pharmacy at CVS (if they don't have it in stock, they can order it for you and have it the next day). If you are near The Pump Station, they should have it (the one in Santa Monica carries it). It has to be refrigerated, so you have to ask for it as it is stored in a refrigerator in the pharmacy. It is not a prescription, but you have to ask at the pharmacy because of the refrigeration issue. Hope it helps!

P.S. You can also try Mylicon gas drops which are in the baby aisle of any drug store or at Babies R Us, Target, etc. It might help for quick relief, but for overall help, also include the Biogaia routine (it is somewhat expensive, about $40/bottle but VERY worth it!)

You could drink some prune juice to help her along.
And when all else fails, they make little glycerine suppositories for babies.
I had to use one on my son when he was a few weeks old. I got an "immediate reaction" from him. :)

Also, pat her bottom. Sometimes just focusing on the area helps her.
