i'm trying to wean my 10 mo old off of the bottle, the doctors recommend they be done with a bottle at 1 yr. so i figured i'd start weaning now...anyway, i tried this morning to give him his bottle in a sippy cup and he got really frustrated and threw a huge fit. he was so mad he wouldn't try the sippy cup any more. i don't know if maybe it is the wrong kind of sippy cup and it's too hard to get liquid out of, or if he's just being stubborn. i've always heard not to push it concerning food, so i'm just wondering how to go about this. i tested to sippy cup myself and it was a little difficult, so it may just be a matter of getting a new one. just wondering what ya'll think.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice, it was really helpful. I ended up putting water in his bottles and giving it to him. That really threw him off and about 2 days later he was fine with a sippy cup. He's been doing all sippy for about 4 days now. I've been giving him half juice/half water for a couple of days now and he loves that, so I don't think he'll be going back to bottle any time soon. hooray!

The kid is gonna do what he wants to do in his own time ;p...however...just continue to offer him the sippy cup each time he sits down to eat something & eventually he will 'get it'...taking him off of his bottle for napping and/or bed will more of a challenge but patience will be rewarded eventually.

I agree with Ava. They do what they want when ready. I wanted my kids off the bottle at a year so I started early like you introducing the sippy cup. I had to try several before I found one she liked. Sometimes they like to start with the ones that have a softer mouth piece and sorta has a bottle feel! I would then offer it during the day as much as possible. Eventually they will get it. I think I would put juice in the sippy only so that they would want it more, and used the bottle for helping sooth them. At first this works great and eventually thye want their sippy. Try tkaing him to pick it out, then he may be super excited to use it!

I remember when I started or should I say TRIED to start my daughter on a sippy at 11 months. She could never figure out that you had to tip the cup to get anything out. Sometimes it is the type of cup, but as many times as I would try to show her, it was just not happening. One day I decided to try a straw cup and she instantly got this. Needless to say, we never did a sippy cup. Some people were pretty surprised that she went straight from a bottle to a straw, but I'm glad she did. Now she is 3 and 1/2 and drinks straight from a cup and sometimes will still ask for a straw cup. They will do it when they are ready, but the sooner you try to transition the better it will be for them and much easier for yourself.

straw sippies ftw! my son hates regular sippies...but straw sippies and water, you can't stop him. he's 15 months...and i admit he still has 2 bottles (1 nap, 1 bed) but he drinks a formula/milk mix, so i don't blame him... lol.

With my oldest we switched cold turkey without any problems. With my 2nd, we changed all of his bottles to hold only water, so if he wanted to have his formula or juice, he had to take it from the sippy cup. It made the bottles less enticing.

We did it cold turkey on our daughters first birthday. We talked about for the 2 weeks leading up to that day.

I took her to the store and let her pick on out herself.. Then I purchased one just in case.

Once I put her to sleep the night before, I reminded her in the morning, she would be 1 years old so no more bottles, she was "Going to get to use a sippy cup!" I then thew away all bottle paraphernalia so we would not be tempted to go back..

The next morning at breakfast I asked, do you want milk or juice in your sippy cup? We never looked back.. At her birthday party that day, every person also gave her a sippy cup.. she was alawys able to have a choice of cup (gave her some control) and I would ask her, milk water or juice? For different meals.

My pediatricians office recommends no bottles after a year, but they also understand that some children have issues with this, so they say to wean completely by 18 months. I wouldn't push too hard right now because formula or breastmilk needs to be #1 right now. Stick with bottles for that, but offer water (or juice if you allow it) in the sippy cup for practice. Then, once he is comfortable with the sippy cup, you can gradually move to the formula or breastmilk.

I started my son about that age. It might be to hard for him. Have you tried the nuk brand? if you have a tough time sipping anything through a sippy then i would pass on that brand. Also try putting juice in the sippy so it is kind of a treat for him and do a bottle at night until he is likes the sippy. this can be a hard transittion for kids sometimes. good luck.
