Born Last Century, I Have Become My Own Grandma

Talk about ages has led me to thinking, what will my grandkids say about me? I mean I knew my granny, born 1889. I knew my great grandma born in the 1860s. I sounds crazy that my grandkids will be thinking...my grandma was born last century in the 1900s!
Oh...I feel old! Do you remember people born in the 1800s?

What can I do next?

My great aunt is still with us at 106, born in 1906. Is that close enough? :)

My grandparents were born between 1890 and 1895 and I never thought they were born last century. My grandma lived to a 103 and thanks to her I consider 90 young!

I really feel I need to add my 13 year old son was born in 99 and I assure you he doesn't feel old being "born last century". How about you get back to us in say 80 years, if you are still around, because then you will have a reason to feel old.

I knew and loved my Aunt Leta (technically 2 greats). She was born in 1898. My brother and I idolized her even though we were very small children (we were about 4 and 2 at the time). We were fortunate enough to live next door to her for a while and spent a lot of time with her. My mom would send us next door to collect her for almost daily dinners. I never think of her as old. Well seasoned but not old. I can't help but think of all the major events she lived through.

Your question makes me think of my most prized possession, a rocking chair. My paternal grandmother gave me the rocking chair when I was in college and long before I had any babies. The chair comes from my grandfather's (her husband's) side of the family. His mother rocked her children (my grandfather and his brothers) in it and his mother's mother (my grandfather’s grandmother) rocked her children in it. My grandmother rocked her children in it (my father and his siblings). Now it's my turn. I love rocking my own children in that chair. It has such a lovely creaking sound.... That is a major connection to the past for me. A tangible reminder like family photos.

All of my grands and greats were born in the 1800s. My kids and I spent New Years Eve 1999 into 2000 with my great aunt to celebrate her having lived in 3 centuries (born 1899) - it is one of our fondest memories. I had my beloved great grandmother until 1963 and I was 13... my grands until my late 20s....my kids and their friends love to hear stories about my university years in the late 60s and early 70s.....I did not have my kids until I was in my 40s so probably will not know my grands well....I think my kids will pass on all the stories since they love the ones I tell....

Ha ha . . . no, both sets of my GPs were early 1900's.

Your post does remind me of how my sons used to tease me because I was born in '69 . . . "Mom you were born in the 60's!!!! You are OLD!!"

I told them I would have my revenge when their children laughed about them being born in the TWENTIETH CENTURY!! Yep, they squeaked in!

I'll tell you what makes me feel old - when I see a new crop of kids for First Communion and I realize they must have born in the mid-2000's.

My grandparents were all born in the 1800s. I'm not sure of the birthdates of my father's parents (I'd have to look it up), but my mother's mother was born in 1861. My mother's father was born in 1849, and could remember the Civil War. My parents were born in the very early 1900s and, if they were still living today, would both be over 100 years old. Some of their older brothers, my uncles, were born in the late 1800s. I knew some of those uncles (and aunts) when I was little.

But you are not your own grandma! You will be you, whether you like it or not. And your kids may be tickled at how WAY FAR BACK you can remember!

There were others born back then as well - but I have no idea about all the ages - just remember seeing them off and on during childhood (folks just didn't travel about as much back then)

I remember my mom's dad born 1855 died 1953 and my dad's mom not sure when she was born. Both my dad 1910 and my mom 1911 born in the month of August. A couple of my uncles were born in the late 1800s and I do remember one of them quite well.

So there are a few of us around that can recall them.
