Patrick (17 months) loves his books and for me, it's at the top of my list of favorite things to do with him. What are/were some of your little ones favorite books as well as the recommended age.

Dear P.,
I'm am so glad you two love to read! What a great way to get your son prepared later on in life!
I totally love Chicka Chicka boom boom(by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault) but that may be a bit of an older aged book, and there is also Boom Chicak Rock(learning to count) by John Archambault.
Sandra Boynton's books are great and rhyme and come in boardbooks so are tough for toddlers.
SOme of her books:Barnyard Dance, Snuggle Puppy, Oh My, Oh My Dinosaurs and Pajama Time!
Eric Carle is also awesome: The Grouchy Ladybug, The Very Hungry Catepillar, Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you See?
Karen Latz also has a lot of books that deal with manners and laerning a lesson but are in boardbook form:No Hitting, Excuse Me, I can Share and she has several others that are very cheerful and colorful.
I do like P.D. Eatsman and Dr. Suess serisa called Beginner Books and they have a picture of cat in the hat in the corner but they may be for an older toddler aged 2.5 maybe since there are a lot of words wtc. There is a boardbook in the series called Summer by Alice Low that's very colorful and not too wordy.
Yes Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown is a classic! A definate must buy!
My Very First Mother Goose by Iona Archibald Opie and illustrated by Rosemary Wells is a great book!
Any of the Peter Rabbit Tales by beatrix Potter come in boardbook and hardcover forms and are a classic.
A book that kids like and I LOVE is Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, it's a book about a baby boy and his mom and him getting older than he has a daughter when he's grown up and sings the same song to his daughter that his mom sang to him. It's a lovely book.
Also I don't know if you celebrate Christmas but The Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore is fun and a classic.
Good Luck
Pammy

My 19 month old likes Priddy Books because of the bright photos. He LOVES the book DOG, which is a 'pop up" book and has a companion, CAT , which is just as great.
He also really likes the word books that came with the "Your baby can read" series.
Also really likes "10 apples up on top", and any book that has "slide" windows that reveal the picture next to the word.

As someone posted, Sandra Boynton's books are great for both parents and kids! Eric Carle is another good author for this age. And find some books of simple kids' poetry at the library too -- even if some poems seem "old" for him, he still will love the rhythm of your voice. Shirley Hughes books are lovely (some are simpler, some have more complex stories as he gets older). Anything by Rosemary Wells is great. Also go to the library and talk to the children's librarian or see what's on the "new books" shelves in the children's section. There are tons of wonderful books out there and you won't have to pay a penny to read them! Have a wonderful time. You can't read to him too much!

The Berenstain Bear and Little Critter series offer lots of interesting topics to choose from. Same for Froggy, Arthur, Dr. Seuss, and more.

As for individual titles, there are so many great books to recommend for kids under 5, including Randy Reilly's Really Big Hit, If I Were a Pirate, Crafty Chloe, The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes, How to Reach a Star, etc.

I'm a children's book reviewer and if you want more suggestions you might find my site Books for Children helpful (www.books-for-children.com)

My daughters love the Sandra Boynton board books at that age and well into age 3-4. I know them by heart myself. "Brown bear" (Carle), "Jamberry" and "Goodnight Mooon" (authors?) were favorites too. I also love Usborne brand books for the older toddler and preschooler - very creative. And one of my favorite illustrators is Eric Rohman ("My Friend Rabbit" and "Clara and Asha").

My son also loves reading. We really like the Sandra Boynton books (Hey Wake Up and the Going to Bed Book are our favorites). We're also big fans of P.D.Eastman (Go Dog Go and Are you my mother?). My son loves Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. There are a lot of good books out there- and a lot of bad ones. I'd recommend reading the book before you buy it if you can and seeing if you like it as you'll probably read it 1000 times in the next 6 months. Enjoy this special time with your son!

Hi P.. I have two boys 3 years old and 17 months. We do not watch tv so we read a lot of books during the day. I am always looking for new authors but the ones that I have found to be my favorites and my kids favorites are - Sandra Boyton (I think this is good to up around 3 years old), just recently starting reading Eric Carle to my three year old (but think it is good for younger as well) and we both love them, also just recently discovered Karma Wilson (Moose tracks and a Frog on the Bog are our favs) - very cute books that we both enjoy greatly. I just love the childrens books because they are so cleaver. Not sure where you are located but I live in Virginia Beach and we have a great library. I go on line and reserve books to be picked up at the drive thru - it is just awesome. I also use the search on Amazon.com to find new books to get at the library for my kids because they have a search engine where you narrow down by age. I would love to hear back from you if you should find any particular authors that you love as we are always looking for new books to read.

I LOVE books- I feel so blessed my kids love their books, too.

For your boy's age, try reading with him "Mrs. Wishy Washy" by Joy Cowley; any book by Eric Carle; "Duck on a Bike"...

Also, you could ask your local children's librarian and he/she would be able to help you find the right books.

My son is 3 yrs & 3 mo's old...he LOVES books...mostly those that have a story that he can relate to (about families, animals, dinosaurs - things he likes) as well as colorful artistry within each page to keep him engaged. He is now especially into Brown Bear, Brown Bear - what do you see? (by Bill Martin, Jr). Now that he knows his colors so well & can recognize several animals, he "reads" it himself & he's so proud! Also Rachel Isadora has some wonderful books & does absolutely beautiful illustrations.

My kids love books by Julia Donaldson (The Gruffalo , room on the broom). You can buy them for younger kids with cardboard pages. They also liked books that had touch & feel sections when they were small.

P.,

I work in a pre-school with ages 6 weeks - 2 years. I also have two grand-daughters under the age of three. All children in those age brackets love rhyming books. Sandra Boynton is my favorite author for very young children. I also like books Like "Tumble Bumble" by Felicia Bond. "Goodnight Moon" is a must have book. Both my grand-daughters love books. The 18 month old loves anything "Elmo" best. The 2 1/2 year loves " GO Away Big Green Monster" best. Go Away Big Green Monster is a wonderful book for showing children how they can control fears and such situations. Interactive books are great too- by this I mean, books with different textures for your child to touch, books with lift the flaps to see what is under the flap. "Its Potty Time" has a button for the child to push and the button makes the sound of a toilet flushing.

I think that one of the most beautiful things is reading a story with my son. Even if now he doesn`t understand the stories and only listen with pleasure the sound of my voice when I read to him, later will enjoy a stunning collection of children's books.Personalized books will be cherished for life! So, I ordered some from the store I See Me, using online coupons offered by the site http://promocodes2011.com/i-see-me/promo-code/.In this way we managed to have the unique books and save some money.

Jamberry by Bruce Degen

Guess How Much I Love you by Sam McBratney

Dr. Suess board books (these are shortened versions of the longer ones. Eg - Ten Apples Up on Top)

Enjoy reading time with your little one!
