Hi moms - I need help with some book recommendations for my neices and nephew. I want to get them some books, but I am unsure what the best ones are for their ages - 2 year-old girl, 3.5 year-old boy and 5.5 year-old girl. Does anyone have any books that your children around these ages really love?

Thanks so much!!

For the youngest ages, we really loved any/all of the "Boynton" board books, especially "Barnyard Dance" and "Blue Hat, Green Hat". They are all so cutely illustrated and hillariously funny, and can be very interactive if you're an animated reader.
Good Luck - Enjoy!

My son's absolute favorite book is My Dad's Toolbox. It is published by Barron's. Very cool. It is a pop up book with working tools to help fix the house. He never gets enough of playing with this book!!

My 2-year old loves the Sandra Boynton books (Barnyard Dance; Moo Baa La La La; Hippos Go Berserk; etc) The Bill Martin Jr/ Eric Carlye books (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See; Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear; The Very Hungry Caterpillar). There's a book I think is really creative called The Giant Jam Sandwich but I can't recall the author. The Dr. Seuss books are always a good bet in my book. What about Shel Silverstein for the older girl? That may still be a little old for her. I loved those books when I was a kid but I don't remember at what age. Another is called Tacky in Trouble by Helen Lester. We've got a ton of the little golden books that my daughter loves. Ooh- we were given a couple of books for my kid's birthday that she loves, there First Look and Find. We have a Baby Einstein one and a Sesame Street one that Elli loves. They're huge board books full of bright colorful pictures. I think they got them at Toys R Us. Here's the website for them http://www.pubint.com/childrens/index.cfm/book/4523/class...
We are a big reading family. I love nothing better than to sit down with a good book. And Elli gets so excited to get a new book.
Well Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Hi L.,

"Goodnight Moon" is always a good pick. Sandra Boynton and, of course, Dr. Seuss have some fun books also.

You can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss. My girl's especially loved Mr. Brown Can Moo because it's full of animal noises that you can really play up on. They also loved a book that was called "Because a little bug went Ka-Choo!" It's one of those because this happened this other thing happened and so on, types of books. It was silly and funny. They also loved Fox in Socks which will twist your tongue up in knots and make it ache.

My daughter, who is now 6, loved her Hello Kitty and Disney Princess books. She also likes the books with the hidden pictures that you have to find. Froggy and Clifford books are great for 3-5 year ages, boys and girls.

L.,
We LOVE books too.

The ones I was going to suggest were already suggested to you:
Sandra Boynton
Dr Seuss (my 4 year old recites cat in the hat on his own!)
Eric Carle
Pop up books for the 2 year old or "touch and feel books" even my 4 year old likes those

There are some great books on opposites.

What a great gift! I would LOVE for my relatives to get my kids more books as presents!

Take a look at her books. I bought "The Bear Snores On" when my daughter was 1 yr. old. It was one of her favorites! Then I discovered that the author had written more and I have been buying them as they come out. My daughter still loves them at 5 yrs. old. I bought the first one in paperback and then rebought it in hard bound because I am going to keep it. You could buy one for each of the kids and I can assure you they would love them! Especially if you read it to them and squeak for the mouse, rumble for the bear, tweet for the raven. :P
And yes, you can find them anywhere.

My older 2 kids love books -- 2 year old daughter and 5 year old son. Both of them love the Cat in the Hat Learning Series..... There's a Map in My Lap, There's No Place Like Space, Wish for a Fish, Oh Say Can You Seed, etc. There are over a dozen books in the series. They are educational but it's the fun-to-read rhyming style Dr Suess is known for.

Curious George is also a hit with my son and my 2 year old likes Richard Scarry. They also both like the Berenstein Bears books. Do you know their favorite movies or characters? There are countless paperback storybooks based on movies and tv shows -- Thomas the Train, Strawberry Shortcake, Sesame Street, Spiderman, etc.

My 5 year old is reading now and he likes the simple Level 1 or Level 2 readers. Bookstores like Barnes and Noble have a section just for those readers in the kid department. He likes the super-hero themed ones he can read but they also have Princess stories and other storylines like ones about dogs or cats or going to school that your neice might like.

Not sure about some of the kids, but for the 5 year old girl....Fancy Nancy books. Jst look them up on Amazon. I have a 5 year old daughter who just loves them. They have great pictures and wonderful words to add to their vocabulary.
You may be able to find some books for the younger children on there as well. They might have a special search for ages. Good luck. Books are a great gift to give.

I absolutely love books and so does my three year old daughter. The ones that I found that will keep her attention are anything that has little "windows" that open and close or ones that play music or sounds. For the 5.5 girl I would consider any Shel Silverstein. I LOVED his books growing up and cannot wait until my daughter is old enough to understand his books. Also, for the younger ones, Eric Carle or anything by Margaret Wise Brown ~ she wrote Goodnight Moon. My daughter loves Goodnight Moon and we also recently received the companion book to it called "My World." I could recite them both by heart since I have to read them to her so much. :-) Hope this helps!

My 4-year old loves these elaborate pop-up books that my mother recently bought him.

Hi L.- I am a preschool teacher. I LOVE the Eric Carle book - The Very Hungry Caterpillar- great opportunities for counting, color identification, nutrition and science lessons. Also a great book you can order is Berentstein Bears' Spooky Old Tree. It has repetitive text and the kids pick it up super quick. Oh- and a rebus book called I Love You is perfect for that age group. Rebus books use pictures instead of words. The repetitive text plus the pictures makes the child feel like they are reading themselves. There are dozens more-- Spilt Milk, Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?, Seuss' ABC book is GREAT for letter id as is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Happy Shopping!!
