Can you guys steer me in the right direction? I need a birthday gift for a 6 year old girl. I thought to get a word girl t shirt but can't find one. Also thought to get a book or DVD re actual princesses living or dead but can't find one either. Open to resources for these first two or other ideas.

Purchase had to be online and with a fast turn around.

The countries I can think of are Britain, Monaco, Denmark, Sweden. I don't know what's written for children though. Some of the stories are kind of tragic (Princess Grace and Princess Diana come to mind) but both were commoners who became princesses (kind of puts the emphasis on marriage but at least makes royalty accessible to the average person), and I imagine the books are pretty sanitized for children. The Danish royal family has some pretty strong role models in their princesses and queens. They, and even Queen Elizabeth as a young woman, weren't afraid to get their hands dirty. Going back in history, you could look at Elizabeth I or Catherine the Great.

B., There is an ADORABLE book that I had when I was a kid called Pickle Chiffon Pie. It's about a king who wants to find the perfect man to marry his daughter (the Princess!) & their adventures as they go to find the perfect thing to impress the king with, & win her hand. It is avail on Amazon, & there is also a YouTube video of the book being read aloud. Links to both below.

I know PBS shop sells that stuff so I checked - they have tee shirts different sizes - this tee shirt would be about the right size for 6 years (they have others also)

What I thought was cute was the Word Girl pillowcases they have (they have all kinds of stuff on there) for about $20.00. My little one would have loved that.

good luck :)

Consider a Self-Rescuing Princess shirt (think geek, I think)
The Princess In Black (Ninja princess - fiction)
if you can't find what else you are looking for
Or any of the Good Knight books (Good Night, Good Knight, Take Care, Good Knight, etc.)

One that is a mix of fact, fiction, and tongue in cheek humor that my daughter enjoyed at that age is Princess Handbook from Usborne publishing. Also, for a fairytale princess who rescues the prince from a dragon using her wits and then dumps him when he turns out to be a shallow git, I love The Paper Bag Princess.

Check out the website A Mighty Girl for a great list of good books and other gift recommendations for girls.

Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch-- fun, good message (no, she does not need the prince to rescue her)-- a big hit with the girls this age.

Target.com might have World Girl stuff. They have a lot of toys and shirts on line that they don't have in stores. Generally their shipping takes 5-7 days, but I think you can expedite. Amazon has 2 day shipping as well, but it can get pricey unless you have Prime.

Have you heard of Goldi-Blocks? They are fun and pretty popular. I think they are appropriate for a 6 year old. I know Target and Toys R Us sells them, and probably amazon too. They are like legos, sort of, but are more science related.

Target also has science experiment kits, craft kits, etc. I think Michael's recently started offering on-line orders, they didn't used to have it.

Check out Amazon for books on Princess Diana or Grace Kelly to name a couple of real princesses.

If you are looking for fairly tales that were the base for Disney princesses stories they are a little too dark for a 6 year old, but that is my opinion.

Here is some for Word Girl, that was one of my daughters favorite shows.

Well the British monarchy is probably what we're most familiar with.
So Google books about Queen Elizabeth (first or second - either one is pretty good), or Queen Victoria and you're bound to get some interesting biographies.
The queens all began as princesses.

Amazon will probably be fastest but you might have some luck on Alibris too.

6 year old girls love arts and crafts - a kit to make something. Michael's sells them for a great price with the 40% off coupon, and I'm sure you could order online.
