A blood clot is painful and has redness up the back of the leg. If you suspect a blood clot get help now. It is very serious.

I had blood clots in my leg. For me it felt like muscle cramps, and got worse until I could barely walk. For most people there are no symptoms.

Go to the doctor immediately, because if you have a clot, it can break off and travel to your lungs or to your brain, and you can die instantly. It is nothing to joke about.

After they found the clot in my leg, they found multiple clots in my lungs. I was lucky, the clots were small, and I am okay. But if I hadn't gone to the doctor I could have very easily died.

And I was only 28! With no history of clotting problems!!!

I fell down the stairs and cut open my knee and had to get 16 stitches. It started swelling like there was fluid in my knee. I went to the Dr. and all he did was extract the fluid. The next day, fluid was right back and my leg started to swell. Went again to the Dr. I had x-rays done and the fluid was extracted again. The x-rays were fine. Meantime my whole leg and foot were almost black, very swollen and painful. So, I went to another Dr. and he extracted fluid once again and sent me to a orthopedic surgeon. That Dr. saw how swollen my whole leg, foot and toes were and I told him my job keeps sending me home. That orthopedic surgeon told me to wear long pants and sent me for physical therapy. I went a couple of times and couldn't stand the pain, I ended up going to the ER. They did a ultrasound and sure enough I had a huge clot that developed from 6 to8 weeks, from the time I fell and going back and forth to Dr.'s. If I were you and the pain is bad, go to the Dr.and tell him you need a ultrasound, especially if it's swelling. Sorry I wrote so much here, but I wouldn't want you to go through all pain and surgeries I went through. Anytime you have any trauma in your legs, you are at risk for developing blood clots. Good Luck!

I actually had a blood clot in my arm and it was so painful, I couldn't function. I had a red spot and thought it was a spider bite at first, but I was frying with a fever, dizzy, chills. It was a clot.
A few months ago, my leg started hurting me. I had no bruising. I figured I bumped it or something. Within a couple of days, my leg hurt so bad I couldn't walk and I was terrified it was a blood clot.
Went to the ER...had a special MRI....it wasn't a clot. Turned out to be a pinched nerve in my back. It was really weird because my back didn't hurt me at all. My leg on the other hand....
If you are really worried, go to the doctor, but you may just have what is called a deep tissue bruise or something that isn't life threatening.

Best wishes.

I had a blood clot Mothers Day weekend this year. I was having some really bad dizzyness andjust wasn't feeling right. I knew something was wrong so I called for a taxi (this was mid night so didn't want to wake my hubby and kids). After doing many tests, they came to the conclusion that it was a clot on my lung after doing an ultrasound and xray. but I was also having pain in the right leg too.
Some things the nurse told me was not to cross my legs, ever, nit to sit on my legs ever and always keep the legs moving if you've been sitting a while. If you're at a movie or riding in the car, she said to make circles with the feet, move feet and legs up and down and if you're on a plane write the alphabet with the feet up in the air and just get up and walk around.

Go to the ER. If you think its a blood clot it could be serious. I had a blood clot that started in my left calf and I thought it was just a leg cramp. We had just traveled back from Europe and I slept the whole way home ( before we had children) I thought it was a leg cramp so I didn't do anything. Within 2-3 days I was in the hospital with pleursey ( an infection in your lung lining) along with mult blood clots in my left lung. I have never smoked, I was fit and not overweight, don't drink excessively, I did not fit the profile.
I still have scar tissue around my lung and my heart. I still have mild pain and soreness and its 17 years later. Go to the ER. Better safe then sorry.
Having the blood clot/pleursey was the worst pain I have ever been in ..much worse then having 3 kids. Go now.

I have never had one, but a good friend recently had one. Her leg turned purple and she had pain. Please go to the E.R. right away! This is so dangerous. They were able to give her meds to help dissolve the clot. She was in the hospital for a few days.

If you don't recall hitting your leg or running into anything, etc. where your bruise is, then yes I think it's better to be safe and have it checked out. If you did injure yourself then it's pretty normal to have a bit of pain where the bruise is...if it's more noticeable/serious pain then go to the doctor.
