Bloody Nose - Bensenville,IL

I was absolutely horrified last night when for the first time (that I recall) in my life I had a bloody nose. While I work in schools and have dragged children to the nurse many a time, and went through a few with my own children and brothers and sisters, I was dumbfounded about what to do for myself. And I was taken completely by surprise (how does that happen?) My husband put a cold wet cloth on my head and we held my nose up into the air. Was that correct? I couldn't remember if the nose was to be up or down to free the flow or stop it. It stopped on it's own somehow.

Sometimes my daughter has really bad nosebleeds that just go on and on. In that case,we put an icepack on the back of her neck. Stops them instantly.
Good luck.

you are supposed to pinch the top part of your nose at the bridge and lean forward (head between the legs). Most likely it's from the cold weather and you had a dry spot in your nose that scabbed off and started the bleeding. Happens to me now and then during winter.

Well stopping it is most important so I think you were successful! ;) I would also agree to not tilt your head back. This lets the blood run down into your stomach and is yucky and could make you feel bad. Also, pinch the nose on the bottom fleshy part, not up top. You want to pinch it where it's coming out, if you pinch the bridge it won't stop the flow. I had lots and lots of nose bleeds as a kid so I know the drill! I also agree that a humidifier might help!

It think it is the LACK OF HUMIDITY in the air and all the forced heat. If it happens 2 more times in the near future, go see your doctor. Otherwise...it is the veins in your nose that are ANGRY about the climate we live in.

it happens in dry air. get a humidifier ...and technically you could choke on it so you should lean forward

pinch and lean forward...an ice pack right below the nose also helps it slow a little faster. Use a humidifier in your home, especially at night. I would also get your blood pressure checked because even though it has been dry and colder this winter it is the holiday season and people do tend to not eat as well as they would normally. Sometimes the extra sodium consumed this time of year will set the blood pressure a little higher and with the dry air makes an easy combo for those tender capillaries to send you an early warning message to get the pressure down a little. So get it taken, even if it means a trip to a pharmacy where they have the blood pressure pump. If it is above 120 over 80 either number then it's time to exercise, eat better and if overeight lose about 10% of the overage to bring things down. If it is over by alot time to see the doctor and not go it on your own. Hopefully it is just dryness. Good luck, health and fortune in the new year.

Because of the dryness in the air, you may have a sore in your nose that will not heal all the way. I would suggest a trip to your family dr since this was a new occurence for you. My husband has problems with nose bleeds and recently had to have his nose cauterized. It was also suggested to him to sleep with a vaporizer on at night to help soften the inner nose and because he had a sore that just wouldn't heal due to dry air, he has to put just a little bacitracin in his nose and work it up into his nose a little to help with the healing process. Good luck and I hope this does not happen again!

I have had nosebleeds since childhood but they aren't as frequent/severe as an adult. Since childhood I think I've tried everything I've ever heard to stop them. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. In addition to what you did, I have done the cold washcloth on the back of my neck, pinched the bridge of my nose & pressed a penny in the middle of my forehead (an old wive's tale from a former neighbor that has actually stopped the bleeding a few times). Sometimes tipping the head/nose back works but if the bleeding is heavy it can go in the throat. I have also had cauterizing done 3 times. Making sure that the inside of your nose is not dry will help prevent nosebleeds. I have used both saline & Vaseline for that. I hope you don't get anymore; I know they can be very unpleasant & time consuming.

If it's as dry there as it is here, it could just be broken capillaries in your nose. Put pressure on it (DON'T tilt your head back, it will go up into your sinuses, gross!)... just pressure, and run a humidifier to help prevent it from happening again. Feel better!
