Hi, i am having a problem with my 7 year old son. He has been getting a bloody nose on a weekly basis for about 3 months now. He has had them a lot in the past but now it seems to happen all of the time. I have been telling him he needs to keep his fingers out of his nose, but i am wondering if it could be something else too. Has anyone ever dealt with this kind of thing before? I have heard from my mother in law that my husband was the same way growing up. I'm not sure if it is something i should be very worried about.

What can I do next?

Thank you so much to all the great advice. I have made an appointment for him to see the doc tomorrow morning. I am going to by a humidifier today to see if that will help. You all have been so helpful, i can't thank you enough!!!

My son's nose seems to get very dry at times - probably something to do with the weather. When it does he has the same problem and his nose will bleed constantly. Have you tried a humidifier or some nose drops that will help to keep his nose moist?

Have you tried running a cool mist humidifier in his room at night? Both my kids have had this issue in the past(as did I) and it is easily cleared up after running he humidifier for a few days.

I am going through the same thing and have en dealing with bloody noses for quite some time. Here is what works for us:

1. Get a humidifier in his room and have it running non-stop day and night!

2. We rub lotion in and around my daughter's nose to help keep it moist. The doctor suggested putting vasaline on a q-tip and rub it around. (My three year old won't let us do that)

Hello B.,

When I was younger, I had the same problem. My mother took me to the doctor, and all i remember is they told her i had an extra hole in my nose, and they sodered (Burned) it so it wouldn't bleed. the process wasn't painful, matter of fact, they didn't put me to sleep or anything. I remember it because i went to school with this nasty scab from my nose that looked like a booger! the scar went away, and that procedure helped my nose to stop bleeding so often.

I have heard that this could be due to a shortage of some vitamins (E, A, C), the kind that are found in fruits and veggies.

Hello! Thank you to you and your husband for his service to our country! much appreciated! I will pray for your husband's safe return!

Also CONGRATULATIONS on your second baby!

My daughter (now 22) had bloody noses throughout her young years. Her nose was cauterized I don't know how many times - as they weren't light bloody noses.

This may sound shocking - but she was allergic to caffiene - her body had an adverse reaction to caffiene (in chocolate, soda, tea - anything that had caffiene). Once we cut that out of her diet, her bloody noses stopped.

When she was 18 - she tried a small piece of chocoalte cake and didn't have a nose bleed. She still limits or excludes caffiene from her diet, it was something she apparently outgrew.

Our ENT (AF Dr in CA and Germany) helped up figure this out. The capillaries on the inside of the nose are VERY sensitve - they react to blood pressure rises, etc. Yes, she also sucked her thumb with her index finger up her nose, but the ENT ruled that out as the problem.

Look into your sons diet - keep track of what he eats and when the nose bleeds occur. If not, get an appointment with the base ENT and work with them.

Take good care!

My brother and I both constantly had bloody noses for sinus reasons, but that's not the only reason kids have them. Sometimes there's a serious problem. If your pediatrician is okay with it, then I wouldn't worry about it, but if you haven't talked to them yet, I'd encourage it, and like my pediatrician always says "If you'd rather it get checked out, don't hesitate to come in."

I had the same problem growing up. Once I started on allergy medicine (in the 8th grade!), it all cleared up. Your son might not have the same issues, but taking allergy medicine is an easy and non-invasive way to either control the problem or rule out allergies as a cause.

It may be nothing. However my son is 18 and my daughter 20. When my son was about 11 he had some bloodwork done. We found out he had VonWilliebrand diease. It is a very common bleeding disorder related to hemophilla. Once my son was diagnosied we started looking into family history. My daughter had chronic nosebleeds, and we did teh whole her nasal passages are to dry, so ointments and what have you for them, helps some. She was tested and also has VonWillebrand and also tested postive. Both of my children have mild VonWillebrand, so for the most part they get there factors checked once a year and if they need dental work they get some extra meds to take afterwards and are given meds beforehand as well. For girls it is a bit different even with mild vonwillebrand they need to take there meds every other day durning there menstural cycle.

hope this helps

Hi!
I had the same issues as a child. My Daughter and Husband both get them from time to time. Several things you can do, are: Saline spray for the nose. It is safe, inexspensive and
easy to find. It will moisturize the sinus and nose and he will feel and sleep better. You can run a humidifier. They can be purchased from 25 dollars on up. Just keep it clean!
Boil a pot of water daily. It puts moisture in the air. We have to go to Flonase for out children during the really cold part of winter and the worst of spring and summer. We have the humidifier on, especially in winter, because of the heater being on. They always get nose bleeds in Winter.
If he isnt really picking, he just may need more moisture. After that, have his pediatrician look into allergies. Best of
luck!

I used to get nosebleeds all the time as a child, but grew out of it once I was a teen. The advice I can give you, is about how to make it clot veeeeeeeeeerrrrry fast. My mom read this in a medical book when I was kid, and it worked every time. Once he gets a nosebleed, take a tissue, or napkin, or toilet paper, or paper towel, and fold it into a little rectangle that can fit under his top lip, and have him just keep it there for a few minutes. For some reason (I have no idea why) this clots the blood in the nose, and ends the nosebleed almost instantly. This ALWAYS worked with me, hope it helps you too.

I get a lot of bloody noses too. We just got a humidifier for our baby two weeks ago, and I haven't had one since. Maybe the air in your home is dry and is making his nose more susceptible to bleeds? I was surprised that it helped being that it is so humid here, but I guess the A/C in the house really dries things out.

I would run it by your pediatrician though.

Good luck!

My daughter was getting them every couple nights for a few weeks. I took her to the pediatrician who saw a scab inside. Apparently at night the pressure builds up and causes it to bleed. We gave her Afrin for 5 days and put vaseline in her nose every night and that helped for awhile. When they came back we took her to an ear, nose, throat specialist who determined the scab had turned into a staph infection. I would take her to the doctor just to be sure.

A friend's 9-yr old daughter had frequent nose bleeds too. The doc said that the capillaries in her nose were very close to the surface, so he cauterized them. It stopped the bleeding completely. She is now waiting to have the other side done (had to wait between sides for some reason). Might be something to look into.

My son gets them a lot due to allergies and and/or a dry house. We are on Rhinocort which has helped a lot, but sometimes he will still get them. We have found that putting A & D Ointment on a Q-Tip and twirling it up the nose before bed for a week really put a stop to the nosebleeds. Now that he is older, he knows when his nose is getting dry/irritated, he knows just to do that on his own.

How long does the bleed last? When I was 12ish, I was getting frequent nose bleeds and one lasted 45 minutes. Mom took me to the ER for that one and it turned out that I had busted a capillary in my nose.

You might also have dry air and could try a humidifer to see if that helps. I know that helps me in the winter.

Best of luck!

I had bloody noses all the time as a kid. They were usually a result of allergies/sinuses and sometimes the amount of moisture in the air. There were times I'd wake up and my entire pillow would be covered in blood. If it's bothering you, go ahead and talk to the doctor about it to put your mind at ease. Hopefully it's most likely going to be more of a nuisance than a worry.

My stepdaughter gets bloody noses fairly often, usually in summer. We think it's the combination of the dry air conditioning and fans, and pool chemicals which can also dry out the skin and tissues. Either way, it often happened late in the day or at night, and she bled a lot which scared her.

We looked up nosebleeds online and taught her a trick we found there. She makes a thumbs-up sign and holds the thumb against her nostril to stop the bleeding. She has to keep it there a full 10 minutes (which is forever to a kid). She also puts a little vasoline in each nostril (not really deep, but just to give some moisture and protection to the tissues). It's made a huge difference. She rarely has them now, and she knows she can handle them when they do happen.

Hi B.. My daughter had/has the same problem. Her doctor told me to use a cool mist humidifier and that has worked well for us. I noticed that she needs it more during the winter months as the heat makes the air dry. I also put an air purifier in her room to control airborne irritants and that has helped. Good Luck!

Growing up, I got daily to weekly nosebleeds from abou 7 yrs old to highschool. I got to know the nurse very well. Sometimes it happened for no reason at all. Eventually I grew out of it but it was a challenge. My mom had my nose cauterized but it didn't help much. Check your son's iron level and RBC level, he may be anemic, but otherwise, I would vote on genetics as a cause.

B. - I have a son who frequently has bloody noses. It usually happens when he has a cold or, this summer, when we were vacationing at a higher altitude. One morning his bed looked like a small animal had been killed! His pediatrician said that some people have capillaries that are close to the skin. There isn't much you can do except put pressure on the nose and make sure he isn't scared. Tell him to not pick his nose. And, It might be smart to warn his teacher. Also, be aware if he ever has a nose swab for the flu - we had a terrible nosebleed at the doctor's office once.

My son has also had frequent nose bleeds. Some that last the entire day off and on. We went to an ENT and he said that he has some blood vessels that sit close to the surface of the lining. Anything can irritate it and make it bleed. He suggested using a humidifier at night and swabbing it with Neosporin. That did help some but in the end he ended up cauterizing(sp) it. That has seemed to do the trick. Good luck.

All of the suggestions have been very good but you also might want to have your son tested for VonWillebrand Disease. It is the most common bleeding disorders and one of the symptoms is bloody nose for no reason. There are other symptoms such as bruising easily. There are also varying degrees of the Disease ranging from so mild you may never know you have it to severe Type 3. My son was diagnosed last year and has it very mildly. I would not have known he had it but they did blood work when he was sick and noticed that his clotting time was too long. Good luck!

My daughter is 10 and still gets them. We find that if it dry she will get them more often because her nostrils are dry and they itch. We use vasoline and she puts just a little up in each nostril and this seems to keep them moist. Also, my daughter has allergies and if she doesn't take her claritin it seems to be worse. We went as far as to put in a whole house humidifier because the winters have been worse for her.

Berndatte, A really good friend of mine was dealing with the same thing, her daughter being 6yrs old. The doc told her because of the dry air in their house, told her to use one of those machines that put moisture in the air ( I can't think for the life of me what they are called) and to use moisture drops in her nose. She has not had any problems since. Good luck. B.

B.,
I think first you should talk to him calmly about it and ask him if he has a sore in his nose or if it feels dry and tell him there are things you can buy that will help. If he says no, then that will rule that out. Picking your nose shouldn't bring on blood for that long of a period of time unless he is just going to town! But if he is deficient in Vitamin K he is more suseptible to nose bleeds. Then you will also need to find out why he is deficient in the vitamin. Unless your child struggles with his weight, more likely it is not high blood pressure. I would see a doctor if you rule out a sore or dryness. Winter is usually when dryness is a problem but you never know. Hope this helps, A.

Hello B.,
My Father, Brother, and my Son all have nose bleeds often. We are from Colorado where the climate is very dry at times. So maybe just try to swab a very small amount of vaseline before bedtime. This did help. When my son was very yong the Dr had prescribed a type of nose spray and it actually helped during a nose bleed. I don't remember the name of the medicine but ask your Dr.
