Bloody Boogers...sorry

Hi,
My five year old blew his nose last night and there was some blood in his mucus/boogers. Again, a little dried blood this morning. He had a cold last month and has been stuffy in the morning since the winter started. Any ideas? Is this a bloody nose? Of course I am thinking the worst!
Thank you!

What can I do next?

I have them too! Its from all the dry air! My daughters nose just started bleeding the other day. I think its normal.

Probably from dry air in the house--I assume in NY your furnace has been running in January? :) Try running a cool mist humidifier in his room at night.

yes - not that abnormal. Use a humidifier in his room at night, maybe some squirts of saline mist during the day and make sure that he is drinking enough water. These winter months can be so drying.

This is normal for the season we are in. Look into getting some saline nasal spray for kids, use it before bed and even after waking if he needs it. His nasal passages are just dry.

It's dryness from the weather and steam heat, if you have it.
He won't like it, but try buying a bottle of saline and droppering a few drops up each nostril morning and night. It helps to moisturize. You can find it in any pharmacy or Walgreens, Duane Reade, etc.
If he can stand it, you might try a Neti pot. Really good for the sinuses. But I'd ask your ped about that first.
Good luck and don't worry!

Happens to my son most winters due to dryness. We have him blow his nose to clear it as much as possible and then try to moisturize the inside of his nose with Aquaphor. It needs to be repeated daily (or sometimes twice daily during especially dry weather). We normally do it after showering before bed, but sometimes in the AM before school.

1. Cool mist humidifier in his room
2. Lots of liquids/ water intake so he isn't dehydrated (eat fruits with high water content)
3. Regular steam
4. If you suspect a slight cold, it wouldn't hurt to rub Vicks on his chest, back, feet and make him sniff it a bit
5. Eat warming foods, hot soups, light tea
6. Sometimes if the nose feels dried out, it is soothing to wet your fingers and apply/ dab the water at the base of the nose. Just feels fresh and hydrated

It's probably just the dry air. As soon as the furnace goes on the air dries out. If you don't have a humidifier in the house try putting a pan of water on the stove and let it boil for a few minutes each day. Just be careful not to let it boil all the way down. Set a timer if you have to. (My neighbor did this and almost burned her kitchen up!)

Also if your heat runs are on the floor you can try putting a pan of water on top of them. Of course, you will have to keep the kids, the cat and the dog out of them.

Anyway, just putting a little humidity back in the air should help.

My daughter and I experience this in the winter. With using the furnace more in the winter, it dries the air out in the house. I purchased a humidifier to use in her room at night. It has helped A LOT.

I boil water on the stove and put Vicks in it then let it simmer on low for a few hours..adding more water when needed. It really helps.

My daughter and I get this when allergies start. In our area this is right around the corner with fruit and nut trees and other pollens are high right now in the dead of winter no less. If it continues for more than a day or so you might want to check with your pediatrician. I don't know, but maybe a sign of a sinus infection?

Hasn't this ever happened to you. His nose probably got too dry.
No it is not a bloody nose. Try putting a humidifier in his room to keep his
nose moist. And first and foremost relax.
