Hi- My son has had a blocked tear duct since he was born in his right eye. It tears frequently and often is very goopy in the mornings. The ped. thought it would clear up on its own, but they may need to "open it" if it doesn't open soon. Does anyone have any input or experience here? I really don't want him to have surgery. Thanks!
if you are breastfeeding flush his eye with milk a few times a day. This cleared up a few clogged ducts in my son when he was smaller. It works!

My son had that as well. The doctor used to push on it really had and encouraged us to do the same, and massage it. He did prescribe some eye drops at one point. It did eventually clear up on its won. You might ask your ped about those 2 avenues before surgery. Hope this helps.

Massaging the duct with eye drops from the doctor cleared my daughters blocked tear duct. The few kids I know of that had to have the surgery did well.

My son had the same things. His was pretty bad. In the wintertime his cheek would be chapped from the tear running all the time. Our ped. had said he'd grow out of it, don't worry about it. Well, by the time he was 2 and a half, we'd had enough. We'd done the massage (which was torture for him), the drops, waiting. We had the surgery done. It was great. From the time they took him back until I went back to hold him was only 17 minutes. He had no pain, no redness, anything. It was instantly cured. He was sleepy for about 30 mintues was it! Our 9 month old daughter has it too in the other eye. We're hoping it will clear on it's own, but if not by late summer, she's going to have the surgery too. We also LOVED the eye dr. who saw our son and did the procedure. I can give you info if you'd like! Point is, in our case, the surgery was much less discomfort than the watery goopy eye and chapped face!

Hi A., my middle child had the same thing and my ped. said to wait a full year and it usually clears up with out surgery. He was right!!! Hers cleared up on its own thank God! I would not let them do any surgery on your little one until he is at least one.

i know the thought of surgery on such a lil body is scary! one of my friends had this issue with her daughter - they diagnosed it at about 14 months and got her in pretty quickly. they assured her it was very routine and she was only out for a few minutes. but still, she had to be put out. very scary! i haven't heard about any "clearing up" on their own, in fact my friend's baby was the first i'd ever heard of it, but apparently it's not a huge deal - she came through great with zero problems. don't know if that helps but good luck!
My son had the surgery when he was 9 months. The doctor could not get it to clear up. We tried the massage and the drops. He constantly had a rash on his face, which he scratched all the time. As scared as I was, the surgery really wasn't that bad. It took maybe 1/2 hour from the time they took him to surgery till I could see him in recovery. He is my oldest and at the time my only child, it was really hard for me but he seemed to bounce back pretty quickly. He is almost 7 now and has not had any problems since. Good luck!

I am sorry you and your little one are going through that! I remember my son having that and also my nephew who is now 11 months also had one that was really bad. If it makes you feel any better neither had to have surgery!!! So, my advice to you is to wait as long as you can stand because most likely it will clear up on it's own. Take warm wash cloths on it and gently massage it - that works great over time and also like some said there are eye drops too that you could also try in addition to the warm compresses. Try not to worry too much, I am sure it will probably clear up. :)
I feel your pain, poor little guy, my son had the same problem and the peditrician gave us drops and said put one in each eye and massage the eye for a minute. It lasted a year then it cleared up. If your able to take some warm compresses and massage the eye.

My son, who is a yr old now, had blocked tear ducts for the first few months of his life. It was like for awhile, it was one eye, but then it would switch. Sometimes, it was in both eyes. Sometimes it was so bad, he would wake up from sleeping just SCREAMING because he couldn't get his eyes open. The dr told us to just massage the eyes with a warm wash cloth. It worked....as far as I could tell. I know that massaging it with a damp, warm cloth, it will keep the eyes from matting shut & hurting the lil one's eyes. They will at least be thankful for that. I wouldn't suggest surgery yet. I've seen a LOT of babies in my life that have had the same problems & they grew out of it.
My sons opened at 12 months. Keep that inmind
