I am exclusively breastfeeding my four month old and all of a sudden have a big, hard lump in one of my breast. It did not start out painful, but is getting is becoming a little painful throughout the day. This all started this morning. Could it be a blocked duct? IF so, do I do warm compressions and nurse mainly on that side?

I've had a ton of cogged milk ducts, and that's definetly what yours sounds like. It's great that you caught it early so it doesn't become infected. Along with what your doing also, massage that duct while the your baby is nursing. I would always start nursing on that side every time. Good Luck, it will clear up in a couple days!

I am a mom of four and nursed all of my children, I am not an expert, but, do think that your guess is correct. If you do not have a little white bump on that side, you should be able to do the warm compress and offer that side first. It does take a little time, over a day, for this to heal. It can be painful and if you are large breasted, I am, it can be more like two days. Do not mess around if you produce any little "white lump" looking like a pussy zit. You will need an antibiotic to cure this. You need to call your OB/GYN. God Bless. You are doing the best thing for your baby!! Keep up the good work!!!

I just had this happen to me too - so painful! Keep nursing as much as you can on that side and, yes, use warm compresses before and after. It also helps to try and massage it out. I even pumped in between feedings while massaging and that helped. It will take 2 or 3 days to completely clear up so just keep at it! Good luck!

I had something similar when my baby was 4 months old and I was exclusively breast feeding. ALtho, I it was a bit red on the under part of my boob. I went to the doctor and I had Mastitis, which is a condition that i had to take antibiotics to get rid of it. It is very painful and i ended up with a fever and throwing up. It started out not so bad and got painful as the day went on. Go to the doctor to make sure it isnt mastitis.

I had 2 a couple of months apart--they never developed into mastitis but were VERY PAINFUL and lumpy. I took Lecithin granules (apple flavored, mixed in water) that I purchased at GNC -- some people say it works to thin it a bit AND, I took 2 hot showers a day, massaging it around and toward the nipple for a while. I also massaged it whenever I was not in public for those few days and nursed starting each session on that side until it was completely better. Good luck! Oh- and I think mine were caused by wearing a bra (even a sleep nursing bra) at night...something to think about if you do.

Um...for me having done that w/4 kids, I don't believe I used warm compressions nor did I nurse mainly on that side. I just changed how the baby was nursing from me. Instead of maybe the regular cradle hold, I'll do the football hold. That's just me. Worked all the time.

Try looking at kelly mom, it does sound like a blocked duct.

I had never ending blocked ducts with my daughter (annoying and very painful). I would always nurse first but there were a few times that they only way I could get the plug out was to pump after nursing. When you nurse point the baby's chin toward the lump/blocked duct. Use moist heat in between nursing (some suggest soaking a newborn diaper in hot water, I would get a wash cloth and dip it in hot water, put the washcloth over my breast and then put my heat pad over the washcloth to keep it hot - I used the ones that are microwave/full of beans or something). Right before you nurse fill a bowl (a medium mixing bowl worked best for me) with water as hot as you can stand, lean over the bowl and stick your breast in the hot water for 5 minutes - then nurse right away.
If your breast is hot to the touch and red, or if you develop a fever then you need to call your doctor.
Good luck! I found I had more blocked ducts between November and April when the weather was cold and I didn't really get them in the warmer months.
P.S. watch out for all the milk when you do get it unblocked, whenever I would get a duct unblocked I would leak EVERYWHERE, my shirt would be SOAKED all the way to my pants :)

Massage! Massage! Massage! While nursing or in the shower. Try a hold that points the baby's nose at the clog too. It could take a day or two to get rid of. I had one become infected once and I wanted to chop my boob off. If the pain increases and you start to feel sick, call your doctor. Good luck!

Hi S. Make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. So he/she can determine what the lump is. I knew a nurse who have just had a baby and she was breastfeeding her and discovered a lump and went to the doctor soon after she felt it and it was cancer. So don't wait around go check it out now.
