Blister on Thumb

My 15 mo used to suck his thumb also. He wound up with a crack on his thumb and I would put the lanolin you use for breast feeding on his thumb to keep it moist. It is safe for him to ingest. If the blister is still intact don't pop it. When it does pop try the lanolin unless it looks infected then you will want to put neosporin or something of that nature on it. You may want to talk to your Dr. to see what is best. My son did stop sucking his thumb after it cracked. Hope this helps.

Hi J., I got to tell you, i am 51 years old I have been a momfor 25 years, been doing daycare for 11, years and you are the first and only mom that i have ever heard say they love that fact that their child sucks their thumb, are you kidding me, the blister is from his thumb rubbing against his teeth, so as lond as you allow this, he's probably going to keep a blister, thumb suchking is not healthy for his teeth, a friend of mine was a thumb sucker and to this day her thumb looks like it was badly burned, because of scar tissue from sucking her thumb, and it is ugly, one of my daycare little girls kept getting blisters on her thumb from sucking it, Thumb sucking is also un sanatari comcidering all the places kids put their hands, the last place you should want any of their fingers is in their mouth. As far as the blister goes you can pop it but it's goping to hurt, but if it pops against his teeth thats going to hurt too. If this is OK with you then there is not much you can do. J.

Yeah, that sounds gross. If he gets blisters, then they break and get infected, then he's putting that in his mouth. Thats just a hot mess! I'm not sure whats out there now. But there was this bitter apple stuff awhile ago that worked on a kid I used to watch. Good luck!!

This happened to my daughter. I cleaned it with peroxide, covered it with a bandaid then used a mitten to cover her hand. I had to do this every so often. Eventually she stopped sucking her fingers when she was really sick and couldn't breathe through her nose. The plus to a binky is that you can throw it away to get kids to stop but it's very hard to stop fingersucking.

Don't pop the blister! If it pops on its own keep it clean. If a blister is intact it is protected from bacteria entering it.

The only thing I would do is be diligent and keep it clean, especially once it pops. Pouring a little hydrogen peroxide on it should do the trick. There is that new spray on band-aid, you could try that too. On second thought, read the package, it might say not to use it on your hands. If it starts to look infected at all, take him to the doctor. I once let my little girls blister get infected and she ended up on antibiotics for 20 days, because it was still infected after 10.
