Blister Care

Ugh...my daughter got a blister the Saturday from not wearing socks with her new tennis shoes. She was playing on the playground that day and I urged her to wear socks but she doesn't like socks so ultimately went without them. Now its the end of the world, for the rest of the weekend she wore flip flops but is not allowed to wear them at school. (She is 5, and this blister seems to be the most pain she's ever had to endure in her young life) I knew this would be an issue this morning when she had to go back so I figured out a solution last night. I put a big band on it, with Neosporin then tried shoes with socks. Ultimately she ended up wearing crocs with socks. But tomorrow is her gym day where she is asked to wear tennis shoes.

Whats the best blister care/remedy to get his healed up? Is it better to leave a band aid on? At first we left it off but even though it dried up seemed to be more painful for her that way, plus it was looking dirty. Also if I can't get her to wear tennis shoes, should I write the teacher a note for tomorrow?

What can I do next?

My son is a runner and gets these periodically especially when running long distances. The trainers pop the blister with a sterile needle to drain the fluid (you can dip it in alcohol or put it in a flame for a minute - but be careful, it gets hot!). The are careful to keep the covering skin intact. They then put some antibiotic cream on it and a pressure bandage so the skin doesn't slide around. Eventually the dead skin on top sloughs off and the new skin isn't so tender.

For gym I would let her wear the crocs to school and let the gym teacher insist that she put on sneakers just for that class. She'll listen to that teacher more than she listens to you. Send in a note to the gym teacher for a head's up. Let the teacher reinforce to the whole class (without singling out your daughter) that socks are important and so is gym!

Don't buy into the drama anymore - she brought this on herself and all you can say is "how unfortunate for you" and "now you know how to prevent it for next time." Put on the bandaid and walk away. This too shall pass.

we use the special made bandages for blisters. I think they are Band Aid brand blister care. they have a cushion on them and something about them helps heal the blister and protect it from popping. Even if it has dried up, these things are great!

I would put peroxideon it to clean it out han put another bandaid on it without anything just so her tennis shoe doesn't rub on it and than have her take the shoe and bandaid off when she gets home so it dries up.

I'd personally recommend getting some Mole Skin (you can find it in the footcare section anywhere).

Put the band-aid on as normal with Neosporin, etc. and cover it with Mole skin.

I was 8 when I started getting a bunion on my left foot. Our podiatrist had me use Moleskin to prevent the pain of new shoes, etc. while the leather stretched around the bunion (I know it sounds gross, but it's just a bone growing the wrong way).

You can purchase it padded or not - I'd recommended the non-padded. It will stay on through all kinds of rubbing, etc. and is really designed to be a stronger adhesive than on bandaids, etc. but is relatively painless to remove.

If you sterilize a pin and then slide it into the blister sideways (rather than straight in) you should be able to drain the blister without her even really feeling it at all. Then cover it with a band-aid, put her in socks and sneakers and send her on her way. A drained blister shouldn't hurt. Good luck.

Blister Care Bandages - they are made by 3M and sold at all major drug stores. Don't buy the store brand, as they don't adhere as well.

Follow the instructions carefully. Do not put Neosporin on the wound before you put the bandage on it or it will not work properly. It will stay on for 5 days.

It works wonderfully at protecting the wound, enabling the body to be able to heal itself, the way it was amazingly created!

I hope this helps!

Put some good first aid creme on it and then put a pad over it, then the band aid......then socks and tennis shoes........
Tell her next time to listen to you......and I don't think the teacher is going to let her out of gym due to a blister.....but you can try......

Good luck.
