Bleach Baths for Eczema

Hi Moms,

Have any of you tried bleach baths to help with eczema for your children? My 7 y/o son has had severe eczema for years, and I just started giving him bleach baths (in addition to creams, oils, herbs, and lasering his hand). I am wondering from your personal experience how long it takes to notice improvement with the bleach baths (days, weeks?). Also, how long do you bathe your children in the bleach? I read that it should be a half a cup of bleach in a full tub of warm water for 10 minutes. Does that sound right? That is what I'm doing, and I give him these baths a few times a week. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

What can I do next?

I had never heard of that so I looked it up. Here are the recommendations from the Mayo Clinic.

I would NOT use a bleach bath for any reason. Bleach is a known carcinogen and you actually absorb more through your skin than you do by drinking chlorinated water.

Have you looked into food allergies. Many times food allergies manifest themselves as eczema. Do some research, but please do not expose your child to any more carcinogens than absolutely necessary.

I would not do a bleach bath for anything...bleach is a pesticide...can/will irritate the skin at the very least not to mention all the rest of the possible side effects/reactions.

I have heard about this. The key is that you must be very careful with the amount of bleach. Also, be sure that you are not using bleach with additives.

I've read that many parents just take their child to the swimming pool a few times a week. It accomplishes the same goal.

When I first heard about this method I was taken aback...bleach is DANGEROUS and should never be directly exposed to skin at full strength. Always add the bleach to the full tub and mix it up before your child enters. Rinse well.

I've been using neosporin on my sons' hands (under the creams). It cleared it right up.

Bleach isn't a good idea for any reason especially for eczema. I use a lotion that is the best for eczema, hands down. It's renew lotion and you can only get it online. It's a great price and you only have to use it once a day. Once I started using this, I never had a problem with eczema again. I also stopped using the harsh antibacterial soaps and used the natural ones. Good luck!

that is a bad idea! it can cause UTI's. not to mention if any of the water were to get splashed in his face. one of our 11 month old twins has horrible eczema. pedi prescribed triamcinalone ointment, it works amazingly. if you dont want to do anything prescription you can use aquaphor, it does a great job as well.
