Hello ladies,

I have a 14 month old who has a SOAKED diaper every morning and pees through on occasion. My issue: getting the urine smell out of his flannel or blanket PJs. They will be clean but not smell 100% clean in the diaper area. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Dreft and oxy-clean. Put a capful of Dreft and a scoop of oxyclean into enough water to cover the clothes. Soak overnight, and then launder as usual.

Works incredibly well on food stains, too!

Iagree with using baking soda, vinegar, or borax. But I advise against using softeners, unless you already have. The softeners build up and the pj's are no longer flame retardant.

Wash smaller loads of sleepers with a better quality laundry detergent/soap such as Tide with Febreze providing the child does not have sensitive skin.

Just want to add to never dry clean your babies cloths. Dry cleaning solvent is one of the most toxic chemicals still allowed on the market. The solvent stays in the cloths and can be inhaled through off-gassing and absorbed into the skin.

You might try adding some white vinegar when you launder his pjs.

A small amount of bleach although it doesn't work well with polyester. Also shaving cream takes out the odor. U can use febreeze and downy.

sprinkling baking soda on them right away helps. I also use oxy clean in the wash load.

soak the blankets/sleepers in some (white) viniger water. then just launder as usual. you can also scrub the crib mattress with it. they have diper liners at babies r us, they saved me when i wasn't ready to limit the amount of liquids my daughter was taking in on a daily basis.
hope this was helpful. happy holidays :)

I use this method for my cloth diapers to get the urine smell to stay away :)

First, run a cold rinse with no detergent
Second, wash on hot with 1/2 the recommended detergent
Follow with another cold rinse.

You can also pre-soak the clothing in a vinegar/water solution before the above wash routine. Works great for cloth diapers (pockets with a fleece inner).

Good luck :)

Everyone is right about increasing his water intake. As for the clothes, try washing or soaking them in hot water and vinegar.

J.; well one concern would be that his urine is that stinky, if a person gets enough water, urine should not stink, that is a good indication of not enough water, also it should not be yellow, it should run clear if you are to be getting enough water, i had this issue when i watched my nephew for the first 7 years of his life, his mom, my sister in law would constantly give him juice, and i asked the dr about his stinky urine, the dr said it should not be stinky if one is gettting enough water it will not be stinky, and he talked about it being clear too, but some blankets if they have not been washed a while, they can stink, but not usually of urine, i would wash it separately and maybe take it to a laundry mat, cause some waters can make them stink too, i would also wash it in hot water, and see if that helps, and use a softner, with a smell in it too, im sure you may of done all of the above, and if it really cant come out, try a dry cleaners if you absolutely have to have that blanket, if not maybe you can get rid of it, and get another , but some blankies are needed, so keep up the good work and keep trying, D. s

Strongly scented urine indicates not enough fluid intake during the day (usually). I notice this with myself and my family. If I increase my fluid intake, then the scent and color lessens. Or, check in with your pediatrician.

As for removing the smell~ try soaking in vinegar or just hot water and baking soda or borax before washing. When you are ready to wash his laundry that is wet, add Borax/ Baking Soda to the load. (Oxi-Clean can be to harsh and will discolor the load as I have used it and I don't care for it too much personally. Borox/ Baking Soda works great and I use it for everything around the house.)

To help keep the break-thru wetting, we used Pampers Nighttime diapers (or something like that.). They worked the best. During the day we were using Target brand diapers to offset the cost. You can try to limit the amount of fluid before bed, but sometimes it is not always possible or advisable~ especially if the urine is so strongly scented.

1 cup of vinegar in the wash (with hot water). You could also use Arm & Hammer's Super Washing Soda (found in the laundry detergent aisle) with the laundry detergent.

Have you tried Huggies Overnight diapers?
They helped my super soaker.

Good luck!

Find some Urine Gone. It's not just for dogs and cats. And the enzymes break down the odor and stains.

Maybe soaking in vinegar would help. Or lemon juice?

Baking soda added to the wash helps deoderize everything. It takes care of everything including cat pee.

The vinegar is the trick, and yes, more water = weaker smelling urine, but...

I would try limiting how much water he drinks before bed. My son was soaking through his diapers and it was because he was drinking a whole (small) sippy cup right before bed. We made sure he had plenty of water to drink after dinner, but started limiting him to two big drinks of water right before bed and he stopped soaking through.
