I have a small canvas that I want to paint w/some oil or acryllic paint.

The dilemna is what to draw?

I am not a good artiste but want to throw some color on canvas for an interesting picture.

Any ideas?

Abstract is good. Nothing fancy. Nothing elaborate.

TIA

What can I do next?

I love to let my daughter pain on canvas. It's a great way to save their art and she does a better job at 'abstract' art than I would. Just a thought. Good luck!

Maybe buy tubes of paint that work well with the decor of the room where you intend to hang it.

Then let the kids go crazy in the driveway with the paint and canvas?

A bowl of fruit is classic.
If you go with impressionist you just need to splash color in a way that suggests fruit shapes.
A few varying sized/shaped wine bottles can be good too.
Abstract always seemed like accidental art to me.
You can put your canvas on the floor, walk across various colors and leave foot prints on the canvas or hurl multi colored painted spit balls at the canvas (or shoot paint balls at it) - and the result might be pretty - but it doesn't suggest 'picture' to me.

Once you've chosen your colors, try this:
Paint the canvas in acrylic paint a single background color. Then, tilt the canvas at a 45-60 degree angle and use a small hot glue gun to melt crayons and drizzle them over the canvas in other colors. It gives both color and texture (make sure the gun is dedicated to this craft only -- you won't want to use it on glue again).

I always start with a drawing first, it's easier to change til I get it right. Start with developing a palate that you love. What color would look good in your home? What is your favorite? Pintrest probably has good ideas. Look online at modern art sites. Get used to your paints to know how to manipulate your paint. Try a few new tools to put the paint on the canvas.
Get some gesso to prime your canvas. Get some gel medium to extend your paint or give it character with texture. There are great books at the library that might give you inspiration. Have fun!

flip it! Gather images which appeal to you...like gathering random thoughts, verses, & pictures. Even adding photocopies of fav family pics will add to the mix.

Once you have all of your pieces gathered, use ModgePodge to make a collage on your canvas. Adding hand-painted details & handwritten notes thruout will make the piece "yours". :)
