hi everyone--

we are looking to buy blackout shades for my daughter's room and for our bedroom, but we are overwhelmed at the online possibilities (which seem cheaper than a local store here in the boston area). does anyone have any recommendations of where to look either online or at a store? we want basic white blackout shades.

thanks!

What can I do next?

We picked up some nice ones for my son's room at Wal Mart, don't remember the price but we could not have spent much, I am cheap!

We bought our black curtains at Lowes. They were not expensive at all and great quality.

I have the cheap black out curtains from Walmart in both of my boys bedrooms and their rooms are dark they also help reduce the amount of outside noise. Even during the middle of the day their rooms are dark not pitch black but dark enough to need the light on.

Go to your local fabric store and ask for black out fabric. It has kind of a rubbery backing to it, white in color. Sew a hem at the top and put it on a double curtain rod. That way during the day you can pull them back and let light in. I have done this in all our rooms and I love napping during the day in cave like conditions! :)

This is way cheaper.

I bought "room darkening" miniblinds at Home Depot which were inexpensive and custom cut, but they hardly block any light at all. So, I ordered blackout curtains form Pottery barn kids (in a purple gingham print to match her room) and they are AWESOME! I use the two together and it really does the trick.

For my room I got blackout panels (curtains) at Target, again, worked way better than the room darkening miniblinds.

I have not tried blackout shades. Good luck!

Walmart and Target have some good ones for about $25 dollars. If you want the room side to be white, while blocking out light, you might try jcp.com. We found some nice ones that were blue to go with our room decor, but they were pricey, like $100.

We bought the Levelor black out blinds and love them. They literally make the room seem like night time in the middle of the day. We got them in Lowes about 3 or 4 years ago, they last well. I don;t think they were too expensive, depends on the size of the window. Also Lowes will cut to fit in the store.
They also help save money on the utility bills as they keep the house cool in the summer and warmer in the winter :)

One very cost effective way to get the black out effect is to go to a fabric store, and buy squares (to fit your window) of the material they use to line drapes to make them "black out." Then, hook them on to the drapes themselves when you need them (we used cup hooks on either size of the window and hung them that way). The benefit of doing this way, besides saving a ton of $, is that when you don't want to room dark, you can easily take the "shades" down.

We bought our blackout shades at Lowes 3 years ago. They are LEVOLOR brand (running horizontal). I dont remember them being too expensive but they are very heavy duty, durable and easy to clean. Lowes can cut them to fit your windows width and length wise. I love having them opposed to reg blinds.

Hope that helps!

I got shades at Lowes, the brand is Levelor or something like that. They are white and very expensive. I didn't even realize that they were room darkening. My husband loves them, he works nights and sleeps during the day.

Home Depot or Lowe's is definitely better-priced for comparable blinds - we've been very happy with the ones we bought there! GL!

Maybe check out Blinds to Go. That is where I got blackout simple vinyl shades for my 1st son's room. The only downside is the cheapest is what we got and the side edges do curl in over time...so light comes in from the sides now, but didn't when they were new. Not sure what their options are now. Back then we looked at Home Depot too...just make sure they say room darkening or if possible open them up...b/c sometimes it is misleading...
Good luck!
