Black Striped Teeth

My son got his two front bottom teeth at 5 months. When he was 6 months I noticed his teeth looked like they have black strips on them. Now that he is 7 months it is only getting darker and I'm afraid he will have rotten teeth. We asked a dentist and he asked all the questions I knew he was going to ask: what kind of water do we have (city), does he go to sleep with a bottle (no), Does he drink a lot of juices or sugary things (no), do I clean his teeth after he eats (I give him a washcloth to chew on after he eats, it helps clean his face too!) But the dentist didn't seem to worried and told me to clean his teeth better. Has anyone ever went through this? Does anyone know of a good way to get into a 7 month olds mouth when they try to fight you?

What can I do next?

Hi M.
The first part makes me think way too early in the a.m. (as it is 6 when I decided to write ya)! Reason being is that I've been a dental assistant for 12+ yrs and 8+ has been in pediatrics...your description is something that I haven't seen but I do have expertise in the second question you posed. I have a now 5 year old and @ 2 ish he didn't want me to brush either. It is ok to give him a "bear hug" if need be because you are not hurting him, only helping him! Also remember if he is crying this will help with the mouth to be open to get in there! I had to do this with my son for several months until he learned that it was something that had to be done! L.

Maybe try one of those rubber tooth and gum cleaners that come with the infant tooth paste. I've been using those for a while with a little bit of the toothpaste. My son liked the taste and so he let me clean his teeth a bit more easily. Also, if you go to onestepahead.com they have these great tooth and gum brushes that toddlers can hold on to and chew on. My son loves this tooth brush. It looks sort of weird, but its great.

I don't think they want to do anything because of how young he is. My son had that and once he turned two we took him to the dentist office and they removed it with one of their device. I think they sand it down? Don't quote me, but my son wasn't too happy about it. I think it's the sounds, that scared him. Hey, it did the trick the stain was removed. He doesn't have it anymore.

Were you on any type of medication shortly before you got pregnant? There's at least one type that I was told would cause my children to have black teeth. It was for acne. Perhaps there are others like that.
