Black Spots on Infant's Tooth

I just noticed that my 7 month old son has two little black spots on the inside of his lower tooth. I think I would have noticed if it had been there for a while. I don't not put him to bed with a bottle, but he does spit up a lot and don't know if this could play into it. He has also been on antibiotics multiple times for ear infections. Has anyone experienced this with your child? Will it go away or should I contact my dentist?

What can I do next?

usually a sign of formula residue. Talk to your Ped. Baby teeth fall out so you may be o.k. with nothing to do. Also, changing to milk may be what the dr. reccomends.

Hi N.,
I would recommend a quick visit to the dentist just to make you feel more comfortable. I recently went to the dentist with my 2 yr. old as she had a "brown front tooth" that appeared out of nowhere. It seemed to get darker and now a tad lighter. My daughter has been less than agile, so the dentist indicated that she probably bumped her front front tooth during one of her bumps and tumbles and the nerve is now dead to that tooth. The good news is that it is common and not an issue for her permanent tooth that will come in when she is older. The dentist told us to watch for gum redness or infection or if the tooth became loose. So far we have not had any of these issues, so we will just wait till she loses her tooth as norm.

Hi N.,

My son had this. I didn't come off with the tooth brush, so I took him to the pediatric dentist. She scratched it off with her fingernail, and my son would hardly sit still, so I had to do it at home, more to finish the job.

She said it was iron deposits from his formula.

If it doesn't come off then though, I'd take the baby to the dentist.

Good luck!
K.

I don't think you need to worry. My 2nd daughter had that too in between her 2 bottom teeth. I brushed her teeth twice a day and never put her to bed with a bottle too. I was freaking out that she had decay so early. I did take her in and the dentist said it was a covering on the teeth as they erupted form the gums. I didn't know if I wanted to believe him since my oldest didn't have this and I couldn't find anything about it online. I even found a pediatric dentist that I was going to take her too....but in a few weeks the black was gone. So, in a nut shell...it should be fine in a few weeks. If not, I'd definitely take him in...just to be sure.

Being in the dental field some people produce a tarter that is black. My friends daughter is 6 and has the same problem. Rx can increase the problem only because it is taken by mouth. Your son is to young for a cleaning but for your peace of mind take him to your dentist, you don't need a pedo dentist yet. Hope this helps.
