If you don't break him from it now he will more than likely do it the rest of his life. Clear nail polish will not work because he can't see it. You can actually buy the stop bite nail polish that tastes terrible. My Aunt dipped my cousins fingers in pepper when he would start to chew them. It worked. Kids are all different. Sometimes just telling them that big boys don't chew their nails will work. If not put gloves on him. I have seen that done alot. He can't chew his fingers if he has gloves on them. Socks on the hands also work.

Wal Mart has a product in the HBA section, near files, nails, polish etc. It has a white and black lable - and I think that the name is "Bite Stop" or "Stop Bite" or No Bite" somthing like that. My daughter and husband were both nail biters and it was driving me crazy. I bought it for my daughter and they both used it with success. The directions say to apply it a couple of times a day, and with our busy schedule, most days it was only applied once. I tried it on my pinky just to see, and from personal experience, I can tell you that it leaves behind a TERRIBLE taste, days later, even after multiple hand washings! (I'm a compulsive hand washer) It is less than $2 and was better and easier than nag nag nagging! Also - I told my daughter that if we had a microscope and could take a sample from under her nails and look at it under the scope, that the germs would look like a million little worms, so every time that she puts her fingers in her mouth, she is eating worms! I don't know which technique made her stop - maybe the combination, but she is always showing me how good her nails look now and I almost never have to tell her to get her fingers out of her mouth anymore. Good luck! :)

There is nail polish in stores (wal-mart or wal-greens) that has a bad taste to it. My mom used to put this on my finger when I sucked my finger. I now put it on my daughters nails to get her to stop biting them. It works! The one I bought is called "Kick the Habit-Stop the Bite" and we got it in Wal-mart and it works GREAT! Good Luck

My 17 month old son is teething and is a thumb sucker in bed. With the new teeth coming in he started chewing on his thumb, which in turn got infected. We would put Vaseline on it and put a tube sock (all the way up to the shoulder) on his arm, then used medical tape in a few spots just tight enough so he couldn't pull the sock off. We stayed with it for about 2 weeks and he has not sucked his thumb since we stopped doing it about 4 days ago. Hopefully it broke the habit!
