Time outs (1 min only) worked well for us.
My sister's 16 month old son has started biting. I think that it mainly happens at day care when another child takes away his toy. She would love some advice for helping to stop this habit. Any suggestions?

My child was the one bit... very frustrating. But I could also sympathize with the 'biter's" parents. What are they supposed to do about behavior their child exhibited 5 hours ago? Lecture a 1 year old??? I had a talk with the daycare & said I expected the teacher to know each child's personality. If they knew my son tended to pester the biter, I would appreciate them being pro-active and keeping the two of them apart. Or basically be proactive with any cycles they see with the biting. Essentially, we have to entrust not only our childs' care, but also their discipline to a certain extent with their care providers, and if we can't trust they can do the full job we have to look elsewhere. I saw a big change after that talk with the daycare and much more detailed reports on my son's day.
I think it is pretty normal behavior at that age and the day care should be experts at dealing with it. his mom should be very dramatic IF it happens around her at that age the words are not as important as the facial expressions and tone of voice. She should be very dramatic with an horrified expression in her "No, no's!"
Also lots of toys that he Can bite, biting feels good when they are teething!
My peditrician told me to squirt a little lemon juice in my daughter's mouth when she started this.I did but she liked it, so I tried lime juice and it worked.
With my youngest I had to resort to white vinegar because she liked both lemon and lime.
