My girl turned one in Dec. and we got her the leap frog train and she loves it now not so much at first but not it is her favorite toy. Also she loved the big legos.
My son's birthday is coming up and I am having a hard time figuring out what to get him for a present. The only thing he has come up with is a phone, but that's not happening. Wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and what you ended up getting. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What are his interests? If he likes electronics, them maybe an mp3 player, or ipod so he can listen to it on way to school or whatever. Maybe something new hes been wanting for his room?
Or maybe a gift card so he can choose what he would want himself.
i would get the phone, (my kids had them at 11) all they really do is text with them anyways, and the silliest thing to boot. pre paid so he cant get a huge bill going. or as someone suggested, the ipod touch, my g/f' s 3 year old plays with her older brothers with amazing dexterity and understanding. It has many many apps available and they can go online etc to text or whatever. My feeling is to keep the kids somewhat up with what their peers are doing, so if the others have similar devices, I'd allow it. Maybe check with his friends' moms to see what they have, I think the nintendo ds or whatever has similar capabilities.
How about an ipod touch? It does everything EXCEPT make phone calls. There is even a texting app you can get - but that is up to you. My 9 year old loves his that we got for him at Christmas.
My son turned 12 last Oct. He loves Legos and building things. We got him a catapult kit which he built and now enjoys target practice using marshmallows.
We've been leaning more toward scientific toys and kits.
