For my 1 year old (she's 2 now), we had a barn yard theme party. It was sooooo cute! I found the theme at Party City. We rented a clubhouse and had a wonderful time with balloons, pizza and cake.
We went cheap on pizza and got it at Little Caesars Pizza, the clubhouse was only $10.00, and I bought rolls of table cloth material for next to nothing. I took the invitation to a bakery and they made the cake to match the theme. I hope you enjoy planning and I'm sure your little one will have an enjoyable time no matter what you decide to do. I think the entire party cost me about $75.00. How many people are you inviting? For my daughters 2nd birthday we just had a family trip to the zoo. She had sooooo much fun! This would be a wonderful idea if you didn't have a ton of people coming.
At one years of age, I learned from experience that if you keep it simple where your able to focus on your daughter at the party she'll know that its all about her and you'll achieve what you set out to do, but if you make it too chaotic you'll be too busy to make it pleasant for your one year old. Pick a theme and make her cake to match the theme and she'll enjoy seeing that this is about me, you'll know by that smirk of assurance she'll have on her face. Oh and the age of the kids that will be attending should decide where and what kind of activities they'll be. Hire someone or get someone to do the video then she'll have it to see when she gets older to see how special she was and is. It's good that your getting a head start. Don't worry your a great mom already from just telling us that's what you want to be. Good luck
How much is inexpensive???
You can always get your decorations from Arnes Warehouse (located on 10 - Studemont exit).
I know a lady that does homemade cakes for $35.00 - Nice ones too. I had her to do a Hello Kitty cake for my sister's 30th birthday. My sister, as 'old' as she is LOVED the cake.
Goto this site for a pic of her cake:

What characters does your daughter like? Use that as a basis and decorate around that...You can even have the other kids to dress up!!!
Good luck
Since your daughter is 7 mos, her birthday is early next year? If the weather is good around then, you could have a party at a park and just do snacks and cake. Or another option is just to invite some people over for a light brunch and let the kids that come play indoors. Or you could just rent a moonwalk. Whatever you do, remember that one year-old birthday parties are more for the parents since your baby girl will not remember it (nor has she asked for a big bash). So have fun !
I wrote you a personal message. I have lots of fun ideas. I didn't want to take up all the space here. Email me back and let me know what you think.
If you want to decorate your own cake....not hard even for beginners.... a great website is www.cakecentral.com. Be warned: most are done by professionals but not all. My first cake and many thereafter were done using tips and bags from the $1 store.
I think strawberry shortcake would be adorable....when is her birthday??
