My daughter is turning 5 and the party is pretty big as she has lots of cousins and a lot of school friends. We're having the party at her grandma's who has a big garden. What activities can you suggest -- we are on a tight budget so hiring anything isn't practical. I also don't want organized games as there will be about 20 kids.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She wants a pony pinata and a rainbow cake!! Trying to get a theme out of that! I thought of stations too so that's sounding cooler all the time. Hop scotch, chalk, etc. Please send more ideas! There'll be about 17 girls and 3 boys.

Organized games can still be awesome with 20 kids... in fact it will probably make the party better. I know, I'm a professional party entertainer! You can set up a simple game of hopscotch, limbo, hoola hoop contests, relay races.

For one game, everyone puts one shoe in a big pile. Then. they have to stand in a big circle with the shoes in the middle. When the music turns on,. they go, find their shoe and put it on. Whoever gets the shoe first wins! Obviously, this is easier if the child is wearing sandals as opposed to lace up shoes, so you could even have separate games.

Another really fun game, is magical freckles. Buy round paper confetti or make your own using a 3 hole punch and colorful paper. Put the children in pairs and give each pair a bowl with paper confetti that is slightly dampened by a water spritzer. Then, on the count of go, one child has to put as many freckles on the other as fast as they can. When you call stop, they have to stop! All the freckle faces line up and the parents count who has the most freckles and that team wins. play it again so the other partner gets the freckles.

Do you have a theme? If so, play your games according to the theme. Do a scavenger hunt outside... lots of fun ideas, just google "outdoor children party activities"

I like the limbo idea and pinata! Also, freeze dance is a great game for lots of people, and it always makes little girls giggle. Musical chairs is good as well.

Do you have a theme that you are already working on? If you do, you might want to add it to your post so ideas can bounce off of it. If you do not have a theme, I think that 5 year old girls would LOVE a tea party with dress up. You can serve punch or lemonade instead of tea and serve finger sandwiches and cupcakes or cookies. Tea parties have lots of layers to them so just eating will take up some time!

I don't know if you will be having boys and girls at this party, and if so, then the tea party idea is probably out. In that case I think that doing stations would work well for you. You can set out sidewalk chalk for the driveway, an open ended craft, like a sticker project, that way no one has to actually teach the kids how to do it.

You could do a pinata.

Then maybe you could have stations, I've done something similar to this. I had a craft station (I bought cups you colored your own picture for the insert), a play dough station, and a game station (full of easy board games like ker plunk)

perhaps you could do temp tattoos and/or face painting too

organized games work well with that many kids. As they aren't just running around wild. We have done tug of war. putting a balloon between thier knees and having to run around a cone and come back. Everyone favorite over the years has been a relay where you run to different stations.. the 1st is spin with a bat to your head 10x, then "try" to run to a jump rope, do that 10x, run to the shoes ( have two lace up shoes) untie the shoes and unlace them and then redo them, run and pop a balloon with thier bottoms, then run home. Balance an egg on a spoon. if you don't mind messy, they have fun trying to find a tootsie roll in a plate of whip cream. otherwise, pinata's, crafts, musical chairs is another big hit.

Limbo, blow bubbles, water balloons if grandma allows it in her garden.
And a piñata!

Why not stations? Let them finger paint (provide old shirts to wear), or ice cupcakes, or run in the sprinkler?
