It depends on the mix and the frosting. Frosting with cream cheese or cake mix with pudding in it should be refrigerated. Regular mixes and frosting can sit countertop for around 5 days.
If I make a cake out of cake mix and pre-made frosting, how long can I leave it out at room temperature? I'm thinking of making my daughter's birthday cake ahead of time but I have no space in the fridge.

Bake the cake the day before and store it in a cool place. I love storing things in the guest bath where a crack open the window and close the door. Makes a perfect winter second pantry for parties.
Hi - At least a day or two unless it's cream cheese frosting. Do you have a cold room (garage, basement, etc.) where you could cover and store it? That would keep it good longer.
The problem isn't that it'll go bad, it's that it will dry out. Just make sure you seal it up well and you should be fine with it on the table for a day or two. Happy Birthday to your dd!
I made a box cake w/ the pink icing & sprinkles on Valintines & it's still at room temp. We have eaten about half of it & it's still good.
At LEAST a day or two.
You can make it the evening before and it'll be fine. I make trays of cupcakes the day before and store them on trays in the (cooled off) oven.
we keep ours out for a week id make it the day before though.
It's going to get dry and stale long before it starts to mold. I think you can keep it out as long as it is good to eat. Once it starts to dry out, you won't want to keep it anyway.
