It's my son's 2nd birthday coming up. And well i wanted to give him a cake or cupcakes. But he doesn't like cake. What are some ideas of what I can give him instead of the traditional cake? Oh and if anyone has any ideas on what i can do for his bday. Where can i take him that is affordable or no cost at all?

If he likes any of these:
Decorated cookie
Brownies
Ice cream - either an ice cream cake or pie or just ice cream with a candle
Pie - my husband doesn't like cake, but he loves birthday pie!
Banana or pumpkin bread/ muffins
what about an ice cream cake? What does he like? I have seen cakes made out of twinkies and ding dongs. Thought I'd throw that in. Or how about just ice cream cones? Whatever his favorite food is, maybe you can come up with a clever way to display it for him, like one would a cake. When our kids were very young, and still even now, all their birthdays are just parties filled with family and friends. We never got into the party idea where we had to take a bunch of kids somewhere and spend a lot for an hour or two. We just had the parties at home, invited all their friends, plus family, and made their favorite meal or whatever and had a nice day. Too bad its cold outside or you could go to the park.
Does he like pie? Or pancakes? My husband used to make birthday pancakes for my kids when they were smaller. They didn't get pancakes with syrup often so it was a treat... and of course, was served with a candle.
Children's museums or the bounce house could be fun for a birthday!
My oldest never liked cake, but she loved brownies! I used to make her brownies or congo bar. I would frost them just like cake. Now that she is older I buy her a fruit filled pie, her favorite. Does he like rice crispy treats?? You can really put a candle in anything he may really like. Have a home party with what ever you make! Just have fun!
My kids dont like cake as well. They dont like cupcakes either. So I do,
Bars
pudding
ice cream treats
and for my youngest Fruit Pizza.
Home made chocolate pudding from scratch!!! :) My kids love it.
6 tbs granulated sugar
2 tbs corn starch
2 tbs cocoa powder
combine in pot
Add 2 cups skim milk
heat to boiling, whisking entire time, until thick. Wah-lah!! (I usually triple this recipe and my family of 4 eats it in a day--but it's a LOT) :) Pour into glass bowl and refrigerate for a few hours before eating. Enjoy!!
Happy Birthday!!
There is a place here in Texas that makes giant Donuts.. Many times they give them to the Police as Birthday cakes.
I saw a "Grooms Cake" that was all donuts stacked it was all from Krispy Kreme
Ice cream cake it only has a bottom portion that is cake, the rest is ice cream.
the great american cookie company makes giant cookie "cakes". The weather in Texas is usually great and the park is a prim location for free party place! If you live in an appartment complex they usually have a "game room" where you can host a party for really cheap. If not you perhaps one of your friends that lives in an appt?
I've seen giant cookies made on a pizza tin or formed in the "round" and decorated / iced, and candles for birthday's. Chocolate chip, or can use any cookie recipe of choice. Or just decorated cookies if a party.
One of my son's favorite cakes was a "rainbow poke cake" White cake with holes poked in it with a fork, then jello poured over, let cool/refrigerate, then top with whipped topping. I made cutouts and sprinkled dry powder jello on top to write whatever decor or name, etc., which colored the topping. It was a huge hit! So moist. (that recipe used to be on the Pillsbury cake mix)
We had the party (no gifts) just kids getting together to eat at a local pizza place, the cake was dessert.
Angel food cake from a mix, and use a 7 minute icing is a nice alternative over regular cakes.
rice crispy treats or crispy treats made from fruity pebbles, chocolate pebbles or cake pebbles. always a hit!
K.:
Try a pie instead of a cake.
As to what to do? I don't live in Clinton, MD...you are on the other side of the river...soooo I can't help you there.
If you come over the Woodrow Wilson bridge? A day at the national mall - fly a kite there - that's free and fun!! pack a picnic and have a day of it!!
Last December we actually had friends in town who wanted to go to DC - it was cold - but we had a picnic on the Mall and it was a blast!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your son!!
Has he eaten a cake made with applesauce? I think that sometimes kids don't like cake because it's too dry for them.
Check a recipe like that out, and see if you think he might like it better.
Dawn
Happy party to you both!
You could do a giant cookie cake, or a rice crispie cake. You don't even have to go to the 'cookie store', you can just make up a mix of his favorite or just a basic sugar cookie and spread it in a pizza pan and decorate it. For the rice crispies, you could either shape it into a mold or just make squares and stack them and decorate a bit. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. You don't have to impress 2 y/o's!
When my boys turned 2 (we have twins), we did an at home party with a Blues Clues theme. I found a bag of the little figurines on line and got almost 20 of them for about $5 (these were the 'goodie bags', I don't believe in goodie bags, but did have something for the kids to hang onto!). I took a poster board and drew/colored Blue holding her paw up and then cut out of construction paper about 2 dozen paw prints. The kids played pin the paw on Blue. I also used the paw prints (3 of them) and had the kids do a search for clues. This was after lunch and before the cake/ice cream. And of course the clues were easy to find! I had a picture of a plate, a picture of a fork and a picture of a candle on the clues. The answer was Birthday cake time.
Just don't plan too long of a party since they're only 2, they can only take so much before someone has a meltdown. Get a little crafty and you won't spend much at all. I'm the Queen of Thrifty Birthday Parties! We've done Pirates, Harry Potter, etc and had a blast.
Good luck!
Muffins. Pancakes. Cheesy pasta. If the weather is decent, go to the park and feed the ducks. If the weather isn't decent, visit an indoor play structure at the mall.
I think age 2 is the easiest b-day, honesty. At age 1, you're sort of obligated to celebrate reaching one year. At 3, they know something is "up" and have been to other b-day parties and might be aware enough to be disappointed if they don't have the same thing. Age 2, though, they're barely out of babyhood and still oblivious - a fun day with mommy is all that's needed. :)
My favorite as a kid was when my mom would make "cookie pizza". She would make a giant chocolate chip cookie...just bake the dough in a disposable pizza pan. Then decorate with coconut (or none if your child does not like coconut)--my mom would dye it with yellow food coloring to make it look like cheese-- and m&m's were put on top to look like peppers or pepperoni. Slice like a pizza when serving. Fun and yum!
cookie cake, ice cream cake, ice cream sundaes, pie, some sort of sweet bars (cookie bars, pumpkin bars, etc.) or even cinnamon rolls if he likes those!
what about giving the kids their own little mini pizza doughs (you can buy premade or make them for very little $ and time) and laying out toppings for them then you could follow that up with making their own cookie pizzas (put out icing, sprinkles, etc.) - messy but fun!!! if it's a nice day, you can always have a party for free at a park - show up with juice boxes, "cake" and a couple of balloons. just let the kids play on the playground and run around for a couple of hours. for my son's 2nd birthday we just had people over and did a cookout - it was a farm theme but you can always just go with something simple!
Many cookie recipes will convert to a cookie bar recipe where you just put all the dough on a cookie sheet or in a 9x13 pan and bake. You could just put candles in that.
Or, if you want, decorated sugar cookies. You could make a bunch of different shapes that he likes and then decorate them.
