I hated Mirena!!! Hated, hated hated!

No libido
Gained 20lbs, and couldn't take it off
Horrible acne on face
Roller coaster mood swings
Painful, or at least uncomfortable sex

It just wasn't for me. After i had it removed, I feel like a whole new woman, back to myself!

Hi. I use NFP, but I know several women that used Mirena and they all said they would never use it again. One issue that I know happened to several is that it got "lost" which, understandably caused some freak outs. Best wishes to you.

I had Mirena for three years, no problems at first.
Then, I was suffering from ovarian cysts and doctors said there was no connection to Mirena. After doing my own research found out it was a side effect and a pretty painful one at that! I had decided to take it out anyway to give my body a break, I've suffered from ovarian issues since but have also had various problems and more children to add to that. Finally got my tubes tied after the fourth.

Good luck!

My best friend got the mirena insterted within the last year. She has never had any children...but she tells me that she doesn't have a period but she is ALWAYS spotting. How annoying!! I have the copper IUD (paragard) for one year now and things have been going fine for me. My periods are heavier than usual but only last 3-4 days not 6. Guess thats why. Some women say that they have cramping along with the heavy period with this one but that has never been the case for me. I like it.

I can't believe the horror stories I so often hear related to the side effects of birth control. I am so thankful that I came across a book called "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler soon after I got married. It allowed us to avoid pregnancy until we were ready, and then we were able to quickly get pregnant because I knew when I was most fertile. And best of all, no side effects! It just takes regular charting and either condoms or abstinence for about 5 days a month. And it's highly effective.

I got mine in October. I haven't noticed any side effects. My period was all over the place at first. It seemed like I'd heavy spot for the first 2 weeks. Not enough for a tampon but I needed a very thin pantyliner. Then I'd go like a week and get a lite period for a week that went on for like a month. Now I think I go about 4-6 weeks and have a lite period for about a week.
I think it's totally worth it!

i had mine for about 4.5 years, and the only good thing was i didn't have a period. i struggled to loose any weight, even when i did jenny craig. and i felt like i was bloated. ewww...i know some women love it and have no issues. and it took me almost a year to get pregnant after removing it. i don't really have any reccomondations for a BC cause I'm getting my tubes tide thursday so i won't have to deal with any...

I hated it...it would give me cramps every single day plus I got a cyst thanks to it.

I had the Mirena inserted a few months ago & minus cramping & discomfort that first day, no problems. My periods have already gotten lighter. I haven't noticed any weight gain. My only problem is that since I have a hormone imbalance (too much testosterone), the pill evened that out & helped w/any excess facial hair but not the case w/Mirena. No balancing out & I find that my unwanted facial hair is more obvious & needs to be waxed more frequently. Otherwise, very happy w/it.

I did a ton of research on Mirena vs. Paraguard when I was looking into IUD.
I eventually wound up having Essure done, becuase we're DONE with having kids.

That said, at the time, I chose Paraguard because most of what I was reading (granted, you find a lot of negative on the net), was about weird side effects kicking a couple of years after having it. Most commonly, weight gain (like, after 2 yrs), and emotional roller coasters from people that could only attribute it to the Mirena. meaning, things went back to normal after having it removed.

So....just do a lot of homework before you make a decision. How do you typically react to hormonal BC?

I'm on my second. I have had no problems and I love it. I never had periods any more and if my insurance will pay for it, I'm considering just staying on it as long as possible! The first three months are kind of wacky, but after that it has been great for me.

I have an IUD and love it! No side effects, very light period occasionally. No complaints.
