Birth Control Options - Garland,TX

Through testing, we found I am very sensitive, to copper toxicity. Even a tiny amount of extra copper, is very harmful to me. Hormonal birth controls all contain amounts of copper. This really explained why my body can't handle birth control and is so harmed by it. I had been doing Natural Family Planning and stuck to charting and following it religiously. The thing is, I did that when I got pregnant with my son. My body does NOT handle pregnancy well and it is really brutal to me. We know 100%, that we are not having any more children, through me being pregnant. Period. I'm NOT going to be pregnant again. If we want more children, it will be through other means. The problem, is we are still young. We can't get anyone to do a permanent birth control procedure for us. I try to convince them that if I want children, I'm not getting pregnant to have them. It doesn't matter, they won't do it. We use condoms and I totally hate it. My husband does, too. We will use them, as long as we have no other options. Do I have ANY options? Is there any kind of non-hormonal birth control, that I don't know about? The Copper IUD, is the only one I have heard of. Obviously, I can't do that, because of the copper. Any suggestions, or experiences?

**We lost our health insurance, so that's why I'm not asking my Dr. about this. Although, we have talked about birth control about a year ago. At that time, there weren't any options for me. I was hoping, that maybe there are now...? If I come across a birth control, that might work for me, we will go to the Dr. and pay out of pocket. We are saving up for a vasectomy, but we've been told no so many times. They said we have to wait 5 years, before anyone will do the procedure on my husband. 5 years!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

To clarify, I know copper and hormonal birth control, is different. Zinc and copper are secondary ingredients in most hormonal birth control. ( I was told this by my Dr. and the high-risk OBGYN I saw.) My pregnancy, was just really hard and complicated. To begin, I had severe sickness. I get Polyhydramnios really badly (too much amniotic fluid.) , among other complications. For several reasons, I was on bed-rest starting at the end of my second trimester. Simply put, I don't want my body to go through so much again.

If you don't have insurance and need permanent birth control speak to planned parenthood. They will even do tubals and vasectomies on a sliding scale/payment plan and they will not ususally judge you because of your age. There might be a short waiting period depending on availability and some states require a 30 day waiting period to give patients an opportunity for review.

Good luck!

WOW - how many kids do you have and how old are you? What happened during your last pregnancy that was so horrible? I would think that your doctor would take that into consideration and tie your tubes if needed. Have you looked into the Merina IUD? I am not sure if it would affect you from the hormones that are in it since it is only topical and doesn't enter your blood? Hope it all works out for you -

This sounds bad, but what about looking into going to another state for the procedure. Here you can have it whenever you want as long as the husband and wife both agree to it being done. Age isn't a factor. This choice should not be up to any provider as they are not the ones who get to make the decision. I would keep looking. Have you tried the bigger hospitals in Dallas? I would maybe even consult with a high risk doctor to see if they would recommend someone who would/could do the procedure.

Good Luck. I'm really sorry to hear that your body didn't handle the pregnancy well. I am happy to hear that you are willing to look into other options for children there are so many out there that need help.

God Bless and Good Luck

I don't know if it is non-hormonal or not, but I used to use a vaginal film. You insert it at least 15 minutes before intercourse, but I think it lasts for up to 3 hours. You find them in the family planning aisle near the condoms. They are kind of gross, but once it's in you don't feel it and they are better than condoms and about the same price.

who told you that hormonal birth controls have copper in them?? A copper birth control and hormonal BC are 2 different things. The copper IUD is the only BC that has copper in it. You may have a reaction to both, but you shouldn't be reacting to a hormonal BC because of copper. What types of BC have you tried? I have a 3 year implant called Implanon that goes in your arm. it is progestin only. I love it and have recommended it to several people. I don't know if it is something you can get through family planning, but I would look into it. good luck, and I would get some clarification on what exactly you are reacting to.

If I were you I would contact Planned Parenthood and see if they can help you find a doctor that works with them to offer an affordable consult. Their website has a list of birth control options.

Going through them they usually have contacts for cheaper birth control.

I don't think Mirena is copper. It does have a low dose of progesterone, from what I recall. I think your best bet is to find a doctor you can discuss this with though, or a trained professional at Planned Parenthood.
