So I am thinking of going back on the pill. It has been atleast four years since I was on it. Like any other woman I don't want to go on something that would make me gain weight, break out, or lower my sex drive. Any suggestions on what to take? I have thought about an IUD but I am not sure what my insurance will cover. What do you suggest? I have very irregular periods so I thought the pill could help with that too.

I also had a very irregular period. I tried the pill but the side effects (lack of desire, migraines, moodiness) were too much. My doctor suggested the NuvaRing and I loved that. It was just once a month much easier to remember then every day. I did not have any side effects but everyone is different.
I personally wanted something I wouldn't have to remember to take everyday. I had heard great things about Mirena and my doc and I decided it would be a good choice for me since I've already had 1 child and I'm not planning on anymore. I checked with my insurance and it wasn't covered. The price to have one was around $800 so we decided on NuvaRing instead. I've used it for 1 month now without any complications.
the nuvaring is awesome! You put it in for 3 weeks then take it out for a week while you have your period. It has a very low hormone level and if you want you can leave it in for the full 4 weeks and not have a period after the first normal month and then just take it out at 3 weeks every three months is what my doctor recomened. check it out at www.nuvaring.com you will love it if you try it!

I considered that for some time until my friend had ended up in the hospital with a burned colon from being on the pill for so long. It was a side effect that they do not list. A few other people I know had some friends that also suffered this, so that made my decision to leave it alone~
I decided that my body did not need the extra hormone and chemicals to mess with it. If you need to regulate yourself, there are alternative measures you can research that also help with the side effects of PMS, Acne and other female issues. I have noticed it first-hand, as well as others I know.
One of those is Reflexology. For me, it took away the PMS, the bloating, the cramping and my cycle is back to how it was when I was on the pill - heavy for one or two days (with not much cramping) and then very light for about two/three days. Sometimes if I have a session done at the right time by someone else (instead of me doing it), it's gone right away. I have also helped bring on cycles when some have been nervous about it. The skin also looks great as the body works things out, not to mention the other benefits one receives. Massage helps, but it doesn't regulate the cycles as much as Reflexology can. It assists with the cramping.
Like I said - I feel the body prefers to be natural, so I treat mine that way. So far, so good.

I got Mirena because my husband and I are done having children but neither one of us wanted to do anything permanent, because you never know what life brings.
My OB explained that you have to be patient with Mirena because it takes about six months for your body to regulate. She was correct it took six months of spotting for long periods of time (with some reprieve) but for the last few months I have gotten a very light period for about a week.
For me, Mirena has had no side effects at all besides the spotting in the first six months. My skin is extrememly clear, I have not gained any weight, nor do I feel "hormonal." My sex drive is better than it has ever been, and I never think about birth control!
Mirena was covered by my insurance and I paid only a $25 copay! $25 for FIVE YEARS of birth control!!!

Hello Angela, I was off the pill for approx 8 years and started back on this past February ~ I take YAZ and absolutely love it. No weight gain, no bloating, no more bad periods, on schedule, no breakouts, and definitely did not lower my sex drive...would have to say it increased it since i feel "safer" that I won't get pregnant. Plus it increased my bra size :) Talk with your doctor..he/she could help you with what is best for you. Good Luck !!
After baby number two, we decided we were finish. I too contiplated pills, but I've been there done that for so many years. I was simply tired of taking them everyday and worrying about filling the Rx monthly. So I went with the IUD and haven't had any complications so far. Thou it's only been about a month since I got it and I'm still nursing a 12 wk old...so no bleeding or anything. I went with the Mirena (5 yr, hormone released). Check with your insurance 1st because they can be very expensive.
I use the Mirena and love it. I just got my second one a few months ago. They last for 5 years, so I'm currently on my 6th year of using it. No side effects. My first one was covered 80% by my insurance, so I only paid like $200. This last time, we are on different insurance and I had to pay closer to $600 for the Mirena and the office visit. Still, $600 for 5 years of birth control is a good deal. I think that's cheaper than 60 months of paying for pills. Plus with the Mirena, I never have to think about birth control, when to take pills etc and my periods are almost non existint. Good Luck on your decision. I wish I didn't have to take anything, but for me, Mirena is the best option.
