Eva & Donna are correct. You have to get the birth certificate from the State - the link she gave you should work. The hospital only arranges for the SS card.
My son was born January 22nd and I still have not received his birth certificate. The form I filled out for in the hospital was the same one I filled out to get his social security card and I got that in the mail a long time ago. I was just wondering how long it takes to receive it.
Thank you all so much. I was born in Nebraska and up there the hospitals take care of all the footwork, so when I asked my mom about it we both assumed it was the same down here. I got in touch with them today and I'm going to order it later today. :)

I don't think they send free birth certificates anymore. I received one in the mail after I had my 1st son whom is now 5, but when I had my 2nd whom just turned 3, they only gave me a form to fill out and if you want one you need to send it in and send some money. I ended up going online to the city records and ordered a few for our files. I think this is one of the cut backs b/c of the economy. I would send in for one if you are needing it. Good luck!
Just like Eva said you have to order your own copy of the birth certificate. The form you filled out in the hospital just is for processing a birth certificate with the state. You can go online and order a copy of the bc and you can pay online via credit card if you want. My son was just born on April 7, and I received his bc on Friday. They processed really fast.
You have to go to the county clerk in the county where he was born and pay a fee to get an official birth certificate.
As far as I know, you're on your own getting the birth certificate. You can request it by mail or in person but have to pay with cash or money order ($23). I just got certificates for two of my children through the mail. It was pretty easy. Here's a website with more information: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/VS/reqproc/certified_copy.shtm
I wonder if the paper you fill out at the hospital is just so they can have your baby "in the system" once you do request a copy of the certificate.
All the below responses are correct. The hospital arranges for the SS card and provides birth information to the state. You have to actually order the Birth Certificate yourself. You can go online and order it that way or you can go to the County Courthouse (Records Department) and get a copy that way. My daughter was born in September and I believe the fee was $22.00. For me online was easiest and after you order it takes 2 to 6 weeks to recieve it in the mail. Hope that helps.
