Bird Repellant???

Last spring some birds built a nest on a high ledge right over our front door, leaving a poopy mess all over our front porch all summer. Unfortunately we put off trying to knock the nest down until there were obviously baby birds in there, then we didn't want to harm them. We finally knocked the nest down in the fall, but now the birds are back and starting to build their nest again. Short of going out every day and taking down what they've built and trying to scare them off when I see them (it's a very high ledge that requires a ladder to get to so this wouldn't be easy!)... is there anything I can do to keep the birds from building their nest there? Any help or advice is appreciated!

What can I do next?

Was going to suggest the very same thing N B suggested: a fake owl... the best is the kind with the bobbly head so that the wind will give it some movement - makes it appear more realistic to the birds. Ask them at Home Depot about the best positioning.

Fake snakes work wonders too!! They sound like barn swallows who build up high to get away from snakes.

This is going to seem like an odd suggestion, but it really does work! Get an realistic-looking ceramic owl from Lowe's or Home Depot. The birds are terrified of the owls. The trick is to move it slightly every now and then. Good luck!
