We just moved our 3 year old to a big boy bed. We heard that because of his weight, it didn't really matter. Plus his crib mattress was firm. So we found a Serta mattress at Big lots for $100. This should last him for a few years, since you're suppose to get a new mattress every 8 to 10 years anyway, then he can help pick out a mattress once he's older. He has been in the bed for almost a week now and we have had no complaints at all. He transitioned very well!

Good luck with yours and hope this helps!

That's the same question my husband and I asked when we bought our daughter's bed a few months ago. We went shopping and got a nice salesman who 'educated' us a bit on mattresses. He said for a young child, it really doesn't make much difference because their weight is so low, that even if you get a super soft mattress, they won't sink into it much! It's probably better to go with a more firm mattress but not too hard. We went middle of the road in firmness but were sure to buy one of quality so it will last until her teen years! Good luck!

I'd bet it doesn't matter ;) I'm assuming he is a toddler, they sleep all kinds of crazy positions don't they, the type of mattress I doubt will make a difference... good luck!

Hi S.,

When we got our son a big boy bed, it was recommended that we get him a firm mattress. So, that's what he's had for the last few years. It may be more consistent going from a baby bed because the mattress for those are so firm.

Good luck!

I have found with my two, that firm worked the best. It is good for your back, and wont tend to break down as quickly as a softer one. Take him to the store and let him pick, he will more than likely use it for at least 5 years, so why not?
