Beta Carrotene Allergy?

My son is allergic to foods with beta-carrotene. Before he was on table food, a normal serving of any food with carrots as an ingredient would give him horrible watery diarrea (within 10 or so minutes of eating) & a rash on his face & neck. With spinich, sweet potatoes, squash and peaches, he just gets the diarrea. He won't eat broccoli, which I think also contains beta carrotene. That leaves us just corn, peas, lima beans, and green beans. His pediatrician does not know anything about it. My step daughter (who is an adult) reacts the same way when she eats too many carrots, so I guess it runs in their family. My husband feels we should expose him a little each week - so he eats the three pieces of carrot found in pot pies 2-3 times a week & doesn't seem to be getting the rash from this, but still has the diarrea. Is there anyone who knows anything or has had experience with beta carrotene allergy?

So What Happened?

There is no information on the food allergy websites, they deal mainly with eggs, wheat, shellfish etc. I called the allergy clinic and it is so rare that even they do not know how to "treat" it and it is not even mentioned in their reference books. They said they could test him to see if he is allergic to these foods, but we already know the answer to that from trial & error, they don't know how to treat it, and he does not have a life threatening reaction, so there is no real need to put him through this. I guess we just watch him & make sure it does not get any worse and hope that he grows to be less sensitive to it. Thanks for your input.

Sorry M. I've never encountered that problem or have know anyone with that problem. Web MD is a good website with lots of information on it. That might help. Other than that I don't have a clue on what to do, sorry.

Why won't your doctor send you to an allergist? My child's doctor sent us to an allergist at 6 months old. It seems like you should insist on a referral or find a doctor who will give you one. My son is severely allergic to milk.

Not sure if you will find anything about it but try www.foodallergy.org

They have tons of recipes that address many different things and maybe you can email them about this if you can't find anything.

Just a thought,

Hello there~
I was going to say that if you lived in Houston there is wonderful, but expensive naturopath who CLEARS allergies. i have personally seen her work miracles with a friend's child who would literally have to be rushed to the hospital when he would accidentally put something in his mouth that had miniscule amounts of egg, egg whites, or egg protein in it. he would turn purple, stop breathing, swell up etc.. His was life threatening and now he can eat scrambled egss with no problems! Anyway, she is very far from you and you would have to see her once a week I think. If you ever get to Houston her name is Dr. Andi Vorster. Good luck, I know allergies can be so hard esp when you want to get some vegetables in them.
Take care
