Best Kind of Carpet

Hi J.! I'm not an expert by any means regarding carpeting etc. But I do know that they make some kind of carpet that is made from recycled plastic bottles that believe it or not is really soft but any kind of liquid just beads up on it or comes right up. A friend of mine has it in her home and her husband spilled red wine on the carpet (white!) and he just took a towel and blotted it up! It also (I believe) is fire retardant. Otherwise, I'd go with pergo ;)

Well, I guess it depends on what you are looking for...berber is very durable, so it doesn't wear out like other kinds of carpet, but I personally think most of it looks like office carpeting or basement carpeting. Although you can get some really pretty berber (my parents have some beautiful berber) but it is usually pretty expensive for the nice looking patterns. Personally, in my next house, I want the track resistant carpeting...it always looks freshly vaccuumed, even after it's been walked on all week. I really hate it when I can see my footprints all over the carpet the second I'm done vacuuming. If allergies are your concern, I would skip carpet all together and put down some kind of hard flooring (hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile) and put down rugs. Although that presents it's own set of problems, especially hard wood, since it takes a lot of effort to keep it looking nice, and no matter what, it will get scratched and will need to be refinished eventually. Tile and vinyl and less work to maintain, but they don't lend themselves well to room except kitchens, bathrooms and entry ways, in my opinion. Ultimately, you have decide what problems you would rather deal with, because all flooring comes with its share of problems! I hope this helps!

well with children, i would definitly go with a darker carpet. not something that is going to stain to bad. Also they have carpet places that have warrantys on their carpet. so I would also check into that. Or just stay with what you already have, It would be hard for me to put new carpet in our house, just because we have so many little ones. and I would be afraid of stains.

Hi J., I am a daycare provider and I can honestly say that berber is definetly the best type of carpet to get. I have 10 kids running around and of course some accidents and this type of carpet is the easiest to clean and it's great at hiding spots. I like the feel of carpet. I hate hardwood floors, they seem so cold to me even with rugs. I like the fact that their little knees have some padding to crawl around on. For the dirt factor, we bought a dyson vacuum cleaner. This does by far the best job. It's expensive but it is totally worth it. I will never buy another again.

My husband does floors for a living has for 14 yrs and this may sound real bad but we put hard wood floors through out are whole house with a few rugs with 5 kids and 3 dogs it is so easy i even had them with a new baby . I know its not for every one but thought id put my 2 cents in :)

Go hard wood floors with big area rugs!!! It works fabulous!

With a new baby and if you have the choice I would go carpet free! I think it is so much easier to keep clean and dust free. But if you want to go with carpet I would tell you burber. It is great and it is easier to keep clean than the plush carpet.

Berber is a great carpet, just not if you have a dog. Their nails can pull on the carpet and just keep pulling. I just put in new carpet and went with a high traffic area with low fibers. It's a natural color and can't see to many stains. I clean the carpet with resolve high traffic foam, works great.

I advice against carpet. I pulled out our carpet in our house because of stains and stuff and it was in the house when we bought it. It was so gross under neath that I was freaked out that I had my baby on it. There was so much dust and stuff under everything, and I vaccuum everyday religiously. This is only my advice and opinion, but I would stay carpet free, at least until your child is old enough to keep it nice. Good Luck!

If you really want carpet I would go berber..and spend the extra amount to get stain resistant. We have that downstairs on our carpet and liquid doesn't even seep down into the carpet. Have you thought about hardwood at all? I didn't think that I would care for it, but I am truly loving it. It is so easy to clean the messes up off the wood.
