Best Hair Dye to Cover Gray Hair

Hi Ladies,
So I turned 31 a few months ago and all of a sudden quite a few gray hairs popped up in a streak, like a younger version of Cruella deVille :( My hairstylist suggested semi-permanent dye, which I did in the salon, and it didn't cover up a single gray strand and was expensive to boot. So what to do? I'm a brunette so these strands are pretty obvious, and I'd really like a good affordable solution that looks like my natural color.
Any advice?
Thanks!

There is a product in Sallys that you mix with the color that will help cover the gray that is resistent. This works very good for my hair as mine would't take color before I found out about this.

Good luck to you.

I'm 55, so I have quite a bit more grey than you. For years I dyed my hair blond, because no brown hair dye was working to hide the grey, but it didn't look like a natural color, and it damaged my hair horribly. So, I finally said to myself, "I am so tired of doing my roots." I used a color remover then went back to brown. Looks so much better. Anyway, to answer your question, I us Natural Instincts semi-permanent. It covers the grey, and my hair is in much better condition. The grey is covered and looks like highlights, so it's much more natural looking. If your grey is resistant, leave it on for an extra 5 minutes.

Nutresse home hair dye is pretty good. No semi perm dye will cover grays. You need permanent color. If the white streak is in a good spot why not leave it? Also beware gray hair has a different texture, so it holds dye different and lays on your head different. Besides the Nutresse you can use Nice and Easy root color. For a quick cover also permanent and great for in between coloring whole head.

I have been dying my hair for over 20 yrs. Very rarely do I use salon color, due to the expense. The best dyes I have found are all plant based. I choose these for several reasons: They don't test on animals, no animal ingredients, no ammonia, no peroxide. The brands are: Naturtint, and Naturcolor. You can find them in Whole Foods or MOM's in VA. Very easy to use. The box has everything you need, gloves, the color and the developer and a bottle to mix them. Instructions are simple. They cost around $12 -$15. I think that's correct. price. They work on stubborn grey and white. I'd also suggest using a clarifying shampoo first.

A semi-permanent dye, is just that SEMI and will wash out. To cover the gray you really need to use a permanent dye. I dye at home and have good luck with Nice-N-Easy. You'll get the best results if you stay within a shade or 2 of your natural color.

I am a stylist and I would recommend you trying Dickson hair color (professional use only) but it works really well, Majarel by Loreal and Schwartzkopf (professional use only) or Clairol grey busters (Sally Beauty Supply), Wella (Sally Beauty) isn't bad in the reds and blonds. Also half a head of highlights would help you to blend it better also, when it grows out and last you a bit longer. Good luck.

I get partial highlights (top of my head and a couple on each side) with foil every 8-12 weeks of a medium blonde. It helps hide the actual whites that come in. I think she dyes the rest of my head with permanent color that is a shade lighter than my natural. I have pretty dark natural color and it really washes me out. The softer shade with the highlights softens my face and makes me look younger. Good luck!!! Getting older is not all that fun!
