Thanks for posting the question- it reminded me to be more mindful of them. I was curious as well, and did some looking around. I found this very helpful website- thought I'd pass it on:

Hi A.!

We've had the same problem this past week, so I immediately researched and ordered some Skin so Soft from Amazon. I can't remember which kind, but if you search around you should be able to find the kind for ticks. I haven't used it yet so not sure how effective it'll be, but it's safe and hope it'll work.

Good luck and please let us know if you find anything that works.

Hi A., I highly recommend using Shaklee's Basic H2 mixed with water in the same ratio as for all-purpose cleaning (1/2 teaspoon Basic H2 to 16 oz of whater in a spray bottle). It is a non-toxic green cleaner so is totally safe. I have been spraying it on my grandchildren and myself & hubby for 3 years now. Always cover the eyes, as you should not spray anything in your eyes, but it is safe for face, hair, skin & clothing. If you want some, go to my website www.GreenHomeBusiness.net, click into "shopping", and type Basic H2 in the search bar. Contact me with any questions. Hope this is helpful. E. Taft ____@____.com

bug sprays dont repel ticks..... you just have to deal with it. At least here in MN we've never found anything to repel ticks, we check the kids at lunchtime and at bath time for ticks throughout the tick season.

I've HEARD that a lot of vitamin C in your body make them less interested. My friend who used to get ticks all the time in the woods when she walked her dog does not get ticks anymore after she took additional vitamin c. Haven't tried this myself, but I've heard it works and I know someone who it worked for. I'd say it's worth a try!

It sounds like you already know to check them immediately after outdoor activity, which is very important in preventing infections from bites.

I don't know if it works with ticks, but I've found that when I have a diet with plenty of garlic, the mosquitos avoid me more. If your kids like garlic, go ahead and use it in your cooking, it's worth a try (it's got other health benefits, too)
