I have had two baby monitors they both sucked. I had a subscription to Consumer Reports Online, I found it difficult to use & canceled it. What is or has been the best baby monitor you have ever used or seen?

We have been using the same fisher-price monitor for more than three years and it's been fine. Just a simple one with a base and a hand-held device that plugs in or can be operated with batteries.

Hi H.,
for the last 5 years, we have used Fisher Price - I have 2 monitors, 1 in each kids room, and each monitor has 2 receivers (1 each in our bedroom, 1 each downstairs). The oldest monitor, in my DS room, is still working great, it is an older model with only 2 channels but we have never had any problems with it. The newest one, in my DD room, has 10 channels and occassionally gets feedback so we switch a channel and good to go again. I love these FP monitors. The range on thse are pretty good but since we have 2 receivers, I find no need to move the receiver or carry around with me during the day. I just turn up the volume when I am downstairs and I always know if I need to come running!

I wont ever need another one as we are not having more kids but if we were, I would get another FP, that is for sure!

We have a Fisher Price one. It has one base and two handheld pieces which works well for us. We've been using it for almost 3 years with no problems. It has lights that activate when there's sound so we can have it on mute while we watch a movie if we want, but we still have an indicator that kiddo's awake.

So far I am pretty satisfied with my Graco iMonitor Vibe. We've used it the last month or so. We're able to plug both the monitor and the speaker unit in. The monitor takes batteries, the speaker is rechargeable. That means I can leave the monitor plugged in in our baby's room and carry the speaker around as necessary, then put it in its cradle when I head to bed. I don't use the vibe feature all that much, though. It does light up nicely when our baby cries.

However, reading the reviews on Babies R Us, I will agree the battery life is not long. That hasn't been a problem for me, as I plug it in.

My friend went through every summer video monitor on the market.
She swears by the Summer Best View (it can move and has zoom)

I just bought it for my 2nd. She says she never gets interference with the neigbors or anything.

Good luck!

I love my Summer Video monitor. I got it a few years ago, it is the one that has a small tv sized monitor for bedroom and a camera for my son's. I didn't bother with the handheld, because I have a cheap audio handheld that I can use if I need to shower or whatever. It was only $20 and if it needs replaced because I drop it or something, no biggie. But I love the video monitor for next to my bed.

One thing about monitors is that they might work great in one house, but terrible in another. My sister had the same monitor but never used it because it was staticky in her house. Something about the layout of the house or interference in the neighborhood, I guess. So whichever one you buy, save your reciept just in case. And if it seems staticky or gets interference, try moving it. Try moving the camera to a different part of the room, and try moving the monitor somewhere else too. Even a few inches can make a difference. My husband sometimes makes mine fuzzy if it isn't in the right spot. Yes, just him walking in the room. It's weird. But if I move it over, it's fine.

I have CR, and they recommend a sony one, but my suggestion is to look at store websites, and read the reviews of actual users. I have never owned a baby monitor. I have four kids and we have always had bedroom so close together, and I will go in and check on them myself often, so I haven't bothered.

I have been using the Philips Avent basic monitor with DECT technology - basically it's a digital audio monitor that has great range and doesn't pick up interference from other tech devices around the house. I love it! I have it adjusted so the sensitivity is on max and the volume is around the middle - it lights up variably depending on how much noise baby makes, and always wakes me up appropriately in the night even though I wear earplugs
(snoring husband!). The battery life is great - lasts for all naps in the day, then I plug in the handheld by my bed at night. The range is good too - I take the monitor out with me when I garden in the front yard during naps, and can hear every little peep.

I also like the Sony Baby Call. There are only two drawbacks: Range isn't great, but it isn't terrible. Also, the volume is really sensitive. It is easy to turn it up way too loud. The noise gate feature described below is really nice.

We tried the Fisher Price Sound n Lights monitor and it was terrible. It was so sensitive that it picked up every little sound (not in a good way), but it wasn't clear. I couldn't understand what my 2 year old was saying when she called out.
