We stayed at Iberostar in Cozumel and had a wonderful time. Going later this month to Grand Palladium Kantenah in Akumal (south of Riviera Maya) and it has very good reviews.

We've been to Principal, Dreams and both Catalonia resorts on the Mayan Riviera and they are all awesome! If you aren't going with kids, then I suggest Principal or an upgraded suite at Catalonia. Dreams was more family friendly - bright and happy - perfect if you are there with kids. But all were luxury enough but in different ways. Catalonia was more comfortable - tropical décor. Principal was more modern, clean and a little hoity-toity for me.

Don't go anywhere near Cozumel, Cancun or Playa de Carmen. They are all awesome fun places but very very touristy and can get rowdy (not all the time). Mayan Riviera area are about an hour away from Cancun airport. There's Xplore and Xcarat - outdoor parks full of anything you can think of to do with water and cliffs - scuba diving, zip lining, rock climbing, great views and just so much fun. If you look them up you'll see what I mean!

We stayed in Puerta Vallarta for a long weekend and while it is gorgeous there too and the water is great, the resort we stayed was way too crowded. But the food was great.

We stayed at the IberoStar all-inclusive and it was lovely. We never left the resort. My husband went scuba diving and the kids and I had plenty to keep us occupied.

Most importantly, I felt safe there. We were in Playa del Carmen (this trip was a gift, so I had no role in the planning), and at least within this resort, it was not rowdy- however, I agree with Ally G. that it is a very touristy area.

The resort picked us up at the airport and took us back. It was included in the price. We were told not to tip any of the staff, but we did anyway. The housekeeping team kept our mini-fridge full because of this!

The food was decent, the water was filtered and the pools were beautiful. They had a private beach with plenty of seating and the resort as a whole was pretty clean.

Have a wonderful trip with your husband!

Personally I would not go to Mexico. They are holding one of our Marines. I would never give them a dime. Really it is a dangerous place. When I travel, I enjoy seeing the area where I am. I do not want to stay in one place.

Hi M., I LOVE Mexico! been many times in the past 26 years, some times just us and sometimes with the kids.
So mexico is pretty big so there are a couple of decision your have to make.
1. do you want to stay Pacific or Gulf side...I assume you want a beach!
2. Do you want touristy or Mexican?
3. Lots of English or more Spanish?
4. Lots of activities at the resort or do you want to just hang and relax on the beach?
5. Do you want to do city tours or other activities?

A travel agent really is your best bet to help you find the perfect place. My hubby and I have stayed in the following all-inclusives:

Mazatlan: El Cid - a lot of English AMAZING right on the beach, some water sports included, golfing nearby, walking distance to downtown, night clubs and shopping.

Manzanillo: Playa De Oro : very Spanish - no English spoken around town - very authentic mexico experience. The town is fabulous! They are the largest exported of organic papaya - it's it's delicious! They have a tennis court and 2 pools - but not much else for activites. But most rooms have a private balcony and it is across the street from the beach. We have stayed here 2 times!

Your choice will depend on what you are looking for with your stay.

I recommend Allegro Cozumel. It is all inclusive, on the beach and has always been affordable. I will say it isn't the Hyatt, 4 Seasons in elegance, for an all inclusive, they do have good food, in a great location about 20m from town, and is maintained very well. I have been going there since the mid 1990's @ least 16-18 times. My older kids who are now 28 & 30, always had a great time (very family friendly). Cozumel is much more laid back than Cancun, (you couldn't give me a trip there that I would take). Also, I highly recommend the Grand Velas in the Mayan Riviera, that is in my eyes more of a Hyatt, Hilton type hotel. We have only stayed there 3-4 times, but they also have it all, (on beach, great food, not so touristy as Cancun), but it is a little pricer. I do agree with previous comments regarding traveling safely there, read travel advisories about traveling to Mexico. Hope that helps & have a great birthday wherever you choose to go.

We stayed in Riviera Maya at the Hotel Catalonia. Prices were low. Pretty grounds, great drinks and food! That was 5 years ago, not sure if it has changed.

Club Med is kind of pricey, but what you get is definitely worth it!
We did the one in Ixtapa, Mexico a few years ago and we all loved it. Food was great, very clean, several pools, sports and fitness activities, and the kids activities were fantastic, and we felt they were being looked after well!
I would definitely recommend it.
