Belly Button Comfort

My daughter will be 3 in a month, and ever since she discovered her belly button at about 6 months old, she has been sticking a finger in it to self soothe. When shes nervous or uneasy, her finger goes into her belly button. When she goes to sleep, her finger goes in there too. Anybody else have a child that does this? Just curious. I don't see a problem with it, I think its cute, and I am sure that one day she will forget about it.

What can I do next?

I know this is an old question, but since I am having a similar issue with my 15 month old son, I wanted to find out if this was something that babies do and I found this. My son has been doing this since he was about 12 months. He has never wanted a paci, has been a thumb sucker since nearly day one, and as he sucks his thumb he puts his finger in his belly button. Its so funny to watch, but it has evolved into sucking his thumb and sticking the other finger in another warm place...either into his diaper from the top or side (depending on what type of clothes he is wearing) or he will stick his whole hand into the BACK of his diaper and walk around the house. He has many times reached into a diaper of poo. Its frustrating. When I catch him doing it, I tell him, "get your hand out of your pants" and he does it without complaint, but usually back at it after a moment or two. If I am holding him, he will suck his thumb and try to stick his hand down my cleavage. With him its any warm, soft place. I don't get it, but it makes him happy. I am okay with the belly button, but when he does the other places, especially in public, its hard for me. I'm always like, "Oh please don't do this here.." when I see him going for the butt crack. I am curious if any other little ones have the obsession with putting their hands in a warm place while sucking their thumb for comfort. I gotta say though, when I sneek in and see him sucking his thumb with his hand in his pants while he naps, I find it hilarious!

LOL... How cute is that! It's just something she has figured out. At that age, my daughter stuck her tongue out for a week... In and out, in and out... Then it was something new the next week. :)

My 3 yo son has been rubbing his earlobes to self-soothe since he was a little baby. He will sometimes do it to a point where his hears will crack and bleed a little in cold weather, but nothing serious. The funny thing is that my mom self-soothed by rubbing her ears as a baby too. Strange how behaviors are hereditary like that!

I think it is precious! And at least it is her own belly button and not yours that she wants! My daughter had to rub my nose or my husband's ears for the longest time. She eventually just grew out of it, but then I actually missed it! Enjoy your little girl! Mine is almost 13 now...

Before our son started using his blankie for comfort, he would play with his hair when he was tired. It was soooo cute. I think he did this because I always play with his hair when we cuddle.

My son did that also. We could not wear one-piece sleepers because he could not put his finger in his bellybutton. He is now 21 and that is all just a memory now. We still give him a hard time about it.

Oh my gosh...thank goodness my daughter is not the only one! She is now 2 and still has a belly obsession. She no longer walks around with her finger in her belly, but it is still a favorite spot and she thinks it is the funniest thing. My little one was so bad about her belly button, I could not put her in onsies because she had to have her belly button to go to sleep. She would fuss until I unbuttoned the shirt so she could get at it. I always thought it was the funniest thing ever!!
