Bedwetting - Enuresis - at 6 Years Old

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has a really deep sleeper like us. He is 6 years old and we take him to the potty every night around 10pm (after he's been sleeping for 1 1/2 -2 hours) and he will go. Sometimes when we go up to take him potty at 10pm, he's already wet his bed. We're considering the alarm/sensor thing that you attach to the underwear and it has an alarm up by their head. It goes off when it senses wetness. Has anyone had success with waking a deep sleeper with one of these? Which brand? I don't want to spend all of the $$ if it's not going to work.

Thanks for your advice!
Frustrated mommy and tired of the laundry! :)

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone,
I thank you all for the quick responses and they all helped! We have decided to get him excited about wearing those Goodnight BOXERS (they look like shorts instead of a diaper) and he's been doing pretty well. Not as many accidents and the boxers have helped us catch some of them and not have to change the sheets as much. He has still peed so much that it even comes out of the boxers a couple times, but at least it's not as much as before. I may give it another couple years and hopefully he will grow out of it. If not, we may have to try the alarm thing. I'm not sure yet. Thanks again for all of your responses!

Hi, My son is 5 and we have been dealing with a similar issue. The waking wasn't working for us either since he would be wet by that time and usually would wet again. I plan to give the Wet-Stop3 bed wetting alarm at try. You can buy it on Amazon for $32.35. There was one positive review for it. I will let you know how it works!

My daughter was 7 before she slept dry even though she had been potty trained at 2. My 7 yo & 5yo sons both still wet the bed. It is hereditary on my husband's side & my dr. said that we just have to wait until they grow out of it. With my daughter I tried the bed alarm (she slept through it), waking her up through the night--nothing changed. She was such a heavy sleeper that I could go into her room & turn on the light & clean it up & she slept right through everything. She simply had to grow out of it. My dr. offered the medicine for when she had sleep overs & didn't want to be embarrassed. I keep both my boys in pullups at night. I can usually find White Cloud overnight pants at Walmart for a lot cheaper than Goodnights but it depends how big your son is. Both my boys are small so I can buy the 3T-4T size (7yo is 42 lbs). I would never want to deal with all that laundry. They know that when they get up they have to get out of the pullup, wipe up with baby wipes, & put on underwear--no stripping the bed & washing everything for me every day. One thing I have heard about the alarm is that it isn't effective because they have already pee'd when it goes off.

eliminate white sugar! koolaide cakes cookies. don't take my word for it, study the research on white sugar and its affects on the urinary tract... this may not eliminate your problem completely but it will make a difference. also, my daughter stopped having accidents before she was two and my son still has semi-annuals and he is 9

If your son goes to bed at 8 PM then he should not have anything to drink after 6:30PM-7:00PM. With my daughter I followed this routine and also made sure she went to potty just before bedtime. Then I would wake her up around around 2-3 hours after that and take her to the potty again. Hope this helps.

I don't know much about the alarm. I have heard more good than bad about it though. I knew someone who used it and it did not work because their son was too heavy of a sleeper. That is the only bad story I have heard.

My 12 year old Step Son has this. Due to the amount of money we could not afford this item so we went to the doctor, finally, at age 11 and had him put on DDAVP. It has been a dream come true for us and for him. His self esteem is so much higher now and he is 100 times happier than before. I wish I had not waited as long as I did.

I haven't (and no one in my family has, either) tried that thing, I didn't even know there was such a product! Both my husband and my step and half brothers all wet the bed until they were 16 or older. It runs in families. In my brothers' cases, it was from their dad (I don't have the same dad as them), so my kids actually only get it from their dad. So far, my 5 year old only does it about once a week or less, so I feel blessed. My mom did so much laundry w/my brothers, that I can't even imagine what that was like! My step brother's mom tried some medicine that was supposed to help, but it ended up giving him ticks similar to terrets (sp?) or severe adhd. This was several years ago, though, like in the late 80s/early 90s. They may have come a long way since then. Try discussing it w/the Dr. and good luck finding a way to stop it! Sometimes they just have to grow out of it. if it doesn't work, discuss pull ups/good nights/depends w/your son. my brother wanted nothing to do w/them, but my husband preferred not to wake up soaked! Its all a matter of preference/personality!

Your going to think I've lost my mind but i want to point out first i wet my bed until i was 12yrs old and so did my mom.
Most people think you should limit what they drink before bed in hope of not having to go all night but what actually worked for me from advice from my doctor for my daughter was we actually loaded her up. We gave her a large drink before bed. We let her drink what she wanted. What happens alot with kids is they don't feel they have to pee. How many times have you brought a child to the bathroom and they say they don't have to go and when you bring them they do. Well kids at night have to go but don't know yet and their body goes before they even feel they have to go. So what you do is fill them up. They will feel it and have to go.. and will wake up. I went to sears and got soft, water resistant mattress covers. (I actually just used them as sheets) they protect the sheets but don't prevent my daughter from feeling it if she pees on them. But I'll be honest i think she peed on them maybe for one week. So what i would suggest is filling him up before bedtime. To be honest i can't see the benefit to an alarm system. At some point even if you don't do anything he will learn on his own. But even saying that 6yrs old isn't very old for peeing in the bed, some kids don't get potty trained at night until 7yrs old. Good luck

I would not do the alarm. It may be traumatic and embarrassing to your little one. I asked the doctor about it when my 6 year old was wetting his bed and he told me that it happened because he was a heavy sleeper and because he grew up too fast and his bladder did not grow as fast and was trying to catch up and it would resolve itself eventualy. My son stopped wetting the bed on his own and never had an accident again. It took time but in the meantime, you can put a waterproof sheet under the regular sheets and still get him up once a night. It will go away, some children' bladder just don't "grow up"as fast as they should.
Good luck and don'r give up!

We had this issue. I found an alarm (I do not recall the name of it) I purchased it at Westbury Pharmacy. I am sure you can get it at any pharmacy that carries specialty items like Westbury does. It hooks to the boys underwear. It helped wake my son us & reduce the number of incidents. When he is very tired, he still has accidents. We stopped using the alarm when the frequency dropped. He is 10 1/2 now.

The alarm worked for our 9 year old. Curiously it also worked for his 6 year old brother who was in the bottom bunk but not even wearing it. It turned out that as the problem occurred as they fell into a deep sleep. It took only a few days. They didn't like it waking them up. Some kids don't wake up but the parents hear it and get the kids up which solves the problem too.

We had them both on the Feingold Program which eliminates artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, as well as some natural foods for some kids who are sensitive to salicylates. They continued for some time to have problems if given junk food or apple juice.

Their little brother trained himself for night and day at the same time for which I was thankful. But even he had problems if given apple juice. Every child is different.

Good luck.

Hello I had a six now 7yr old that also sleeps hard and I allow him to wear "Goodnites" because I too got tired of washing sheets. They come in brief form as well as boxers which doesn't make them feel like little kids. Yes i know it's no alarm system, but I personally was pass being impatient. He's getting better and we 've seem to have outgrown our bed wetting but I would suggest that route first. Good Luck

C. if it is just happening at night what about the under jams or something? you can also get underpads that protect the bed sheets. have you spoken to the dr?? that sounds rather unusual to be going that much.
