Hi Moms,
I rock my 21 month old son every night and sing to him. I think he is fine with my choices, but I'm getting tired of singing the same old thing! What songs do you sing to your kids at bed time?
Thanks for your help!

Snuggle Puppy is my 3 yr old's favorite. It's a book by Sandra Boynton. I made it into my own tune and he loves to sing it with me at bedtime.

Little Mermaid song - the one she sings when she's in her treasure trove looking at all of her human stuff.
"Look at this stuff, isn't it neat, wouldn't you think my collections complete
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl, the girl who has everything.
Look at this trove, treasures untold, how many wonders can one cavern hold............

We sing to all of our kids every night -- we have three kids, and each one gets to choose a song. Here are some of their favorites:

Alligators All Around (from Really Rosie)
Free To Be You And Me
My Favorite Things
What a Wonderful World
Once Upon A Time and Long Ago (from Peter Pan)
Saint Judy's Comet
Golden Slumbers
In Your Eyes
Circle Game
I Don't Want To Live On The Moon
Hey Little Man (by a group called Eddie From Ohio -- somewhat obscure)
Over the Rainbow
Rainbow Collection
Einini (It's an old Irish Gaelic lullabye)
Somewhere Out There
Pure Imagination
Sunrise Sunset
Eidelweiss

I could go on and on, and I'll probably have songs coming to mind all day, but thats some of them. There's a song called The One Who Knows (by Dar Williams) which I would love to learn to sing to them, but I still can't even listen to it without choking up.... she wrote it for her children, and it's just so beautiful. Someday....

I was a Girl Scout for many years and worked at camp, so I do lots of campfire songs:

On My Honor (If you know the tune, you can replace the words with the words of the book "Goodnight Moon.")
Barges
Red Balloon
Canadian Wilderness

And them some that my parents used to sing

Edelweiss (but my dad always used our name instead of Edelweiss)
You Are My Sunshine
I Love You, Conrad (from Bye Bye Birdie, but I used my kid's name instead of Conrad. I also say, "I don't love anyone like I love you," instead of "I don't love anyone as much as you.")

Kenny Loggins has a great cd:

Rainbow Connection
Pooh Corner

Any country or pop song that's pretty and I actually know all the words to. I get pretty creative sometimes. At Christmas I do lots of Christmas carols. That's really nice for me, because it breaks up the monotony.

I know what you mean. You can get pretty bored, and kids can be stubborn. Just be creative and feel free to change the words. One Christmas trip to Grandma's house (a 6 hours drive) my dad couldn't get me to sleep, so he sang the Twelve Days of Christmas. He thought that one would be long enough ... nope, I was still awake. So he added verses (alphabetically, so he would be able to keep track). 13 Angels Singing, 14 Boys running, I don't remember what 'C' was, so I might have fallen asleep by then.

Carrara barra Wirra canna. It's a beautiful Australian lullaby. My children request it every night, and refuse when I suggest other songs. At Christmas I sing the Little Drummer Boy, Silent Night, The First Noel and Away in a Manger.

You've received lots of great suggestions. I would add "Baby Mine" - song Dumbo's mom sings to him. Bette Midler also sings it in the movie "Beaches". Then look at musicals and Disney movies for more ideas. There are endless choices out there. I also sang to my kids at bedtime and sometimes miss those days now that they are teen and pre-teen. Enjoy this time with your little one.

We make up our own songs a lot. Plus there are some great Broadway musical tunes that work as lullabies (My Favorite Things from Sound of Music, Soon It's Gonna Rain from Fantastiks, Stay Awake from Mary Poppins, etc.). Some great children's cds have songs you can learn. Red Grammer is one of our favorites. If you take a Music Together or Wiggleworms or Kindermusik class you'll have more songs than you have time to choose from too! Good luck! It's one of my favorite times of day to have my girls request songs now. We sing prayers too and have a pretty big repertoire now, but not everyone does that.

I have sang You Are My Sunshine, Johnny Goes To War and a song from Oklahoma play (think that is what it's from) every night for my two kids since the day they were born. The last two were songs my mom used to sing to me.

Go to Walmart or Target and see if there is a nice cd with a variety of songs you may not be familiar with. I found a couple of really nice ones when my girls were that age. I would play it low sometimes to break up the monotony and I ended up learning the lyrics and could sing them myself, too. Linda Ronstadt had a really nice one back in the 90s...

One of my favorites was You Are So Beautiful.
